sun blotches - what casues them? d'uh the sun?

I saw a S1 Disco the other day. Nice tidy vehicle apart from those ugly blotches on the roof and bonnet.

What causes these blotches and how are they prevented. Normally they are seen on earlier Korean cars. Did the owner of this Disc cop a lousy paint job?

It's oxidation of the:
1. clear coat, & then
2. paint.

My D1 has this :( & I expect it will need a complete respray (if I keep it).

Deterioration is mainly due to exposure to sunlight or industrial pollution in cities.

It is much more common in cars made in higher latitude places such as the UK or Korea than Australian made cars. Used to be common with Japanese cars but they have learnt from decades of exporting.

It can largely be avoided by keeping the car under cover and polishing with a polish containing a UV blocker.

You prevent by waxing/polishing regularly. Mine nearly got quite bad at one stage when I was being very lazy with cleaning. Noticed the roof was getting very dull and was able to rub of the oxidised paint with my hands. That was it for me. Full weekend detailing the car and I've not let it get that bad since. :cool:
