Hi Guys i am looking at a 130 tdi that has had the maxi drive axels and an air locka fitted some time ago. I was wondering if there is any thing that can go wrong once these are installed or do these mods fix all inherant problems?

Cheers Jim:D

Guys it also has a PTO winch. What do people know/think about these things?

Which brand of PTO? Does it use the Maxi-Drive t-case PTO drive or is it flywheel driven?

MD axles are very good, and you shouldn't have problems. ARB lockers are also good quality, about the onl;y thing which can go wrong are the o-rings failing and leaking compressed air into the diff when you try to use them.

Year guys it uses a maxi drive pto off the transfer case but do not know what brand of winch it is. One of the wheel bearings looks like it is leaking could this be caused by the air leaking into the diff housing and pressurising it causing the seal to let go?
:D Thanks for the replies

How long have you had them Weeds?

the lockers were fitted by the previous owner and they would be close to 10 years old

the maxi axles were fitted three years ago by me just before my simpson trip, no wear at all to date

pto winch has only been on a month or two, have used it once, i have the standard pto drive

the bearings will be oiled lubed now, i have had a rear hub seal fail, not a big job to overhaul, i doubt that the compressed air would be making it leak.

Sounds like a good setup Jimbob. The PTO drive is about 2k alone.

I have an MD locker (and axles) in one vehicle and an ARB with MD axles in a 2nd. Both are good setups.

The leak in the hub could just be a leak. If it is the ARB seals it is an easy fix, but a bit of labour as it means the diff centre must be removed.

Hi All, I have another question to all Defender fans. I am after peolpes opinion on what it is worth i know its hars to say with our seeing the vehicle but i am only after a ball park figure.

Vehicel has...
Front and rear arb difflocks
maxi drive axels in rear
blue tounge compressor
water tank under rear seat
2nd fuel tank in tub
well built home made rear draw system
big steel canopy
dual batteries
pto winch
chev 6.5 diesel fully engineered
lifted by pro ride
bfg all terrains 3/4 worn
reco transfer case
270 000ks
94 mdl
snorkel

There is a few small dints in the body over all average condition
roof lining in front is falling down.

Thats about all i can think of. It is hard to value due to motor change i think. Any way what do you all think??????

Cheers Jim

Sounds like a serious rig.
This is tough one. There is probably $10-15 grand worth of extras before you get to the chev motor. (then another $5Kish for motor ?)
Price will depend a lot on condition - not so much the dents and dings but more the condition of all that gear. You've gotta assume with all those upgrades, the vehicle has not had a soft life and will have some wear - how bad will determine price. Any bent bits? Suspension? How much will you need to spend? The conversion need to be looked at closely, sure its "engineered" but is it a good job? (Whilst I like the sound of the big chev I'll be interested in what others have to say about it - I'm not sure it adds too much value.)

I'm thinking somewhere between 18 to 23 grand - but hell I'm not an expert so I'm interested to see what the others will say.

Thanks for the imput Sleepy. I will be interested too as he is asking a little more than that. Seems like the only thing i will need to do is the box as it has a serious wine in 5th. too much torque!!! But you never know with a vehicle like that.....

Jimbob,
Chek out a similar rig that sold for $12k recently (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260248824540&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting) (was asking for $20)

Hmm - for me the chev engine would be a downside. They have their fair share of problems...

And the gearbox won't have an easy life...

Yeah it does have its fair share of un knowns. What are the gear boxs worth to rebuild any ideas?

Any one elses thoughts on value would be appreciated....

I have seen good 2nd hand or rebuilt R380s sell for any where between 500 and 2k. Suffix K and L boxes are stronger - if it has one of these (as opposed to a suffix J), it may hold up better.

Dave Ashcroft has new R380s for GBP885 outright.
