Hi Everyone,
I have a series 2a 1969 with original 2.25 petrol, and it appears that I am getting about 15ltrs per 100klm, which seems a bit excessive. It has a holden carb with an adjustable jet screw I had it tuned only about 2 weeks ago including timing, which was way out. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can try to make it use less fuel unless this amount is standard.;)

That consumption is not too far out of line, but may be possibly improved a bit. The Holden carb will not give the best results, although going to the correct carburetter will not make a dramatic improvement.
Some things that may improve it, since you have already done a tuneup, are to check tyre pressure, dragging brakes, this sort of thing. But it is worth noting the following quote from the original owner's manual, which suggests the major influence on fuel consumption:-
"The Landrover has a high powered and efficient 2 1/4 litre engine designed for hard work under almost any conditions.
With all this power available, the vehicle is capable of sustained high speeds under normal road conditions. In common with all vehicles, the petrol consumption mounts rapidly if high speeds are maintained. For example, at ...80kph, the consumption .... will be one and a half times as much as at ... 48kph and at .....112kph the rate will be twice as much." (bits omitted are speeds in mph)
An option on the 88 was an additional spring that required higher pedal pressure to get the last quarter of throttle opening.

Thanks John,
I sit on between 45 - 50 miles per hour.

Your economy is about what it should be. Conduct a compression test. If this is down, it will be eating into your fuel. Conduct a valve clearance adjustment. This helps a little bit. You say that you have adjusted the ignition timing. How did you decide on what position to time the engine?

Best I've got out of my S111 88 2.25 is 20 mpg on a hway run. Has a SU carb, a fairy and was dynoed. They just are not good on fuel in standard dress if flogged at 90 to 110 kmh:eek:. Need different cam, Head work etc. If your up to long trips may as well have a V8;)
