If one wishes to close their PayPal account, or even just change the primary email address, they need to enter the full credit card number to confirm that they are the owner of that account.

What does one do if they no longer have that card [and it's number]? That is to say it was closed a long time ago... Is there anyone who can be contacted etc?

BTW There is no earthly means with which to retrieve that number whatsoever. Maybe piling through statements of years ago, maybe.

Problem solved

For every convention there is an equal and opposite circumvention.

Can you add/link another account and then close everything down via that?

I remember adding a bank a/c when Paypal set up in Australia, before that it was CC only, or US bank a/c.

Cheers
Simon

Rather than start a new thread I have dug this one up.:)

I have advoided this Pay pal thing at all cost till now. Getting to a stage I really have to use this now.:(
I am terrified of exposing a credit card over the net etc. Have also heard some scary stories on Pay pal in the past.

Is it really safe? Or should I set up another card with a low limit at a cost. :(

Thanks Tony

I believe your credit card details are much safer with PayPal than they are at the local restaurant or hardware store where we quite regularly hand over our credit card details.

True, especially if the swip unit gets stolen.

Your computer will need to have virus protection to prevent trojans etc which can be used to log your data.

Recently had $500 or so run up on the credit card by someone buying plane tickets in the UK or something. Definitely nothing to do with me. Called the CC company, wiped it off the card, refunded the overlimit charges, new card, upped the credit limit.

It took longer than I like for the new card to appear.

Aside from that, all good. That's what we pay all that interest from.

I think this was leaked via my previous ISP, but goes to show what you are covered for.

Paypal is good for buying stuff, reasonably easy to get a refund if a trade goes bad. Pay with a credit card to Paypal, to the vendor. Paypal hates it, because you can call your credit card company and challenge the payment and Paypal can't do anything about it.

I set up a separate debit card account. Whenever I buy something on line or paypal I transfer that amount into it. I may keep 50 or so bucks extra in it but all seems to work OK. They cant take money that is not in the account.

As Simon said,,
it can happen,,

but!

The card companies guarantee the security of your money.

How can i be so sure?

well,, in a previous life I had lunch with the Pacific Regonal manager of mastercard,(and I was especially well dressed that day:p), this guy made more money than Tassie, and when he said you'd never lose money using his card,, I believed him.
still do.

I keep a second CC with a low limit for all 'Net transactions.

However, one can still end up over the limit - I'm not quite sure how but it happened to mine and I got hit with a fee from the CC company. It was something to do with the timing of transactions and them clearing.

I had an internet fraud on my Visa. The credit union found it and confirmed it with me. They refunded the money immediately and provided extra security on my account with a rolling code token. From what I understand, the vendors get charged for any frauds as they have not properly checked the cards ownership.

I use paypal the biggest thing to remember is people will often try to scam you. As long as you have a suspicious mind you will be ok.

For example I get a lot of emails telling me to update account details etc and click on link. The emails really DO look like they have come from paypal. However one thing to remember is paypal will ALWAYS address you by your first name if it doesn't it's a spoof. Also never ever click on links in your email, always login via the paypal website. And lastly if in doubt contact them and ask if any email received is genuine. If not they might want a copy of the spoof to investigate.

Remember these things and you will be ok:)
