UHF install

Just bought a UHF for my D2 and when I picked up the antenna the bloke told me I may have trouble getting through the fire wall with the wire. I haven't had a chance to look at the vehicle as it is at a mates place but wondered if any one had come across this and if so what did you do?

Not to hard, there's a big rubber grommet on the left and right sides of the firewall. It has a couple of spare nipples you can open up and push cables through. If the aerial lead has a pre-made connector on the end you may need to make a bigger hole, but it can be filled back in with silastic.

As said above, there are big rubber grommets (I like that word) on the left and the right hand side of the firewall

I found that the one on the left (or is it the right :o ) well the passenger side easier to get at - less gubbins in the way

It is located just below the inertia trip switch - I am sure I posted a pic on another thread - I will see if I can find it and repost / new link to it

I also fimd that its easier to get things through those grommets, particularly through the nipples if you remove the grommet, pass the wire through and then put the grommet back in.

The other trick, is that you can tape the wire to stiff wire as a leader, and then pull it through. I don't recall one side being harder or easier than the other, but it isn't always easy to pass wires under the console, though again a stiff wire leader makes this easier.

yep ...and when you tape the electrical wires to your stiff wire, try to make the join as smooth and tapered as possible- this avoids it catching on things when pulling through.

Got the car back tonight and there is a sound proofing foam pad over the passenger side of the firewall where the inertia trip switch is but no grommet. Noticed wires going through the firewall though that pass through a grommet right over to the far passenger side. Also one over on the far drivers side. Hopefully will make a start tomorrow but more than likely Friday. Thanks again for all the information. JP
