Well, after mutch sketching and talking the build has begun. The plan is to get the trailer built as a good platform for a heavy duty camper but stage 1 of the project is to get the trailer useable as a work trailer when necessary.

I ordered and received the following, 68 inch 45mm square axle, alco offroad electric brakes, alco offroad eye-eye springs with greasable shackles and high tensile u-bolts, 5/120 PCH drums to match the Disco (with M14 studs), a orac offroad coupling and handbrake + handbrake cable kit.

Day 1 involves ordering and collecting 2 lengths of 100 x 50 x 3mm duragal RHS and 2 lengths of 50 x 50 x 2.5mm duragal SHS. I manage to get most of the chassis cut and tacked together, excluding the base of what will become the front storage locker.

Day 2 has the chassis layout complete and i start to weld up the various joins, i also cut some 8mm plate to reinforce the spring hanger mounting points and tack in position the reinforceing plates and spring hangers. i had a rough idea where i wanted the axle to be positioned but i fine tuned the exact position by clamping the springs in position first and checking the weight by hand (very scientific) at the coupling. I moved the axle forward of where i wanted it by 100mm to give better balance.
I also assembled the hubs and positioned them on the axle to weld on the electric brake mounting plates.

Will be good to get the chassis rolling, its getting a bit heavy to keep moving by hand:eek:

Also went out and got some marine bearing grease and a heavy duty jockey wheel.

Thanks mate, no don't have a Mig but recently upgraded my old arc to a you beaut inverter welder. much nicer to weld with.

Today i installed the axle, then pulled the hubs apart and replaced the seals with marine seals, i had damaged one of them the night before and the marine seals look like they'll do a better job. Also made up a clamp-on bracket for the jockey wheel as i don't want it welded permanently to the drawbar, the clamp still needs grinding and refining but at least the chassis is now easily movable.

Yep, gonna have to watch the weight on the rest of the build, but it has to be a work trailer also, so needs to be strong.:D

Started on the trailer body today, trailer will have a large wedge shaped drawbar toolbox with an access door on each side, immediately behind the toolbox is a large enclosed draw the full width of the trailer body that will slide out on the "passenger side". This will be used for storage when working and will house the kitchen when camping/touring. Thats a fair way and a few dollars down the track from now though.
Also bought a 59 litre water tank and a pair of mudguards, will hopefully install both of them tomorrow.

Latest photo's............excuse the mess, damn i'd love a bigger shed:o

Got the water tank mounted today, still need to buy the pump, fittings and water pipe though, and will get a guard bent up to protect it when i start the sheetmetal on the rest of the trailer. also started on the large slide for the kitchen, i had a set of draw slides origionally from a 2 metre long cargo draw out of a work van, these will do nicely with a bit of modification.

Bit more progress......
Have a few small things done like installed the handbrake, safety chains, mudguards and lots of grinding, touching up welds etc. Am also in the process of getting quotes for the sheetmetal to close the trailer up. Getting there.....

Thanks Mick, at least 40 hours so far, probably more. Lots of time double checking measurements and trying to think ahead of what i'm currently doing to try and avoid design faults that pop up as you go along.....

Thanks mate, plans are from......well there are no plans. Knew roughly what i wanted and spent many nights in front of the telly sketching and deciding on dimentions that suit my needs, double checked what i landed up with (drawbar length, rear overhang), with Landandy's trailer and started building:D

So how are you mounting the sheet metal to the frame work ? And what thickness in the sheets that you are putting on ?;)

Well, after a little break from trailer building for various reasons:angel: i got stuck into it for the last couple of days, trailer build is now complete and have now taken it on it's maiden tow from Melbourne to Bendigo for a mate to give it a few coats of paint, and to return his Mig, damn i'm gonna have to buy one for myself....
Then to wire and plumb it up properly and start building the kitchen.

Looks fantastic.

How did you go welding the galvanised beams? I was always told that it was dangerous (fumes are toxic).

Did you just spray the welds afterwards with cold-galv?

Yeah, fumes are toxic, need to ensure good ventilation when welding galvanised beams, also, to ensure good penetration and an even quality weld, you need to grind the galvanising off in the immediate weld area. This helps with fumes. In my case i leave the shed door open and set up a fan to help with air circulation.
Sprayed all the welds on the chassis with cold galv, the trailer is now going to be etch primed and then painted with a grey hammerite finish paint. So should be easy to touch up in the future.

NICE WORK:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Did you go with brakes????
You will need them if you want to carry anything, mine is 580kg empty with 2 spare wheels, licenced to 2000kg.
Did you find it bounces unladen? mine does a bit more than Im happy with, but soon as it gets any weight its no problem at all.
The Mrs had somebody looking at it the otherday, wanted to know where I bought it as they want one:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:,she told them to call in when the Black Disco is home.
Also an older gent driving a D1 asked was it a real Landy trailer when I was getting fuel with it hitched up,I said you bet it is its a LandyAndy Trailer:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D.
Keep up the great work, keep the pics coming.
Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
ENJOY
Andrew

That is a fantastic effort!

I started out with all the intentions of doing this, I'm a competant welder and I have the workshop space etc but as per usual, NO TIME to do anything like this!:(:(

I ended up buying one.:)

The hip pocket hurt, and the satisfaction of building one myself isn't forthcoming, but it was the only way it was going to end up in my driveway before I was too old to go touring with it:eek:

Again, I 'dips me hat' to you, well done!
