Anyone had a play with the new 3G Iphone yet? It's due out on the 11th just want to see if anyone has had a sneeky peek at it and know if the AGPS is everything it's said to be.

Nope, but I've paid for mine and its on its way on the 11th :D

Not really fussed on the GPSr function... Its aGPS like my iPaq... Which was fine...

But more interesting in all the other goodies...

Plus, I'm an Apple addict

Dunno about on the iPhone but on my HTC touch Diamond the a-GPS feature drops the GPS aquire time considerably.

Picks up a location fix in about 2-3 seconds.

Other than that, the US ones are much better as there is more Free apps and you can MMS, black list contact & SMS also send songs

I couldn't do without mine. Having said that I'm in the process of cancelling my Optus service and switching back to Telstra. I did expect that optus wouldn't be great in country areas, but I was astonished to find that it is nearly useless in the Brisbane CBD and suburbs...

Agree completely with the last two comments -

Perfect, useful - does everything...

Optus though is appalling (intermittent 3G at best throughout Darling Point, Sydney...), also poor reception in the Southern Highlands...

I went with Optus - then went back to Telstra after a month. Optus coverage here in western Sydney is appalling. I couldn't make phone calls from inside my house.

Re unlocked phones, are they still branded?>

For example, my son's Nokia N70 3G was bought outright so would work with both Optus and Telstra SIMs. But it had all the Optus branding and button allocation. I downloaded the appropriate software from the 'Net and de-branded and updated the firmware on it.

I've had my wife's Nokia 3G 6280 unlocked from 3 so when she's ready to sell it, I'll de-brand it to remove the 3 branding. (She wants a Nokia N95).

With the iPhone, are maps downloaded as you need them (thus incurring lots of download charges) or are they stored on the phone?

Yeah US has them now, but they only got 3G about 3-4 months ago. 3G is the 2nd generation iPhone.

Regarding the maps and cost, you can download a application which downlaods the google map. Its free, so what you do, when you are at home, download all the maps through wifi and then its compeltely free.

As far as I know the only thing that the D3 phone kit needs is a bluetooth connection. It will not charge the phone.

Whether its 3G is irrelevant to the car connectivity as the 3G/2G etc is merly a data transmission protocol to send data / voice over the air to the phone network.

I doubt very much if LR will have made a lead to plug the iphone into the car. Indeed I dont know if its possible at all on D3.

Hope that helps.
Jon

Thanks Yorkshire_Jon. I'm more interested in the compatibilty with the dock connector in the audio connectivity module to control my iPhone as a media player (& hopefully charge it). I'm not worried about the bluetooth connectivity for the phone function as I find the iPhone's speaker-phone is excellent. Does anyone use their iPhone 3G via the optional audio connectivity kit (part No. LR006792) for iPod and charging?

I forgot to mention I do have 1 criticism of the LR Audio Connectivity Module. Each time you press the next or previous song buttons on your steering wheel it opens the iPod application on the iPhone.

This is a minor annoyance because it means you have to go back to Google Maps if you're using it for Navigation. It seems to be a LR thing however because usually the skip buttons in other car kits etc don't load the iPod app. Something in the LR app is telling the iPhone to open the iPod app and change the song.

Aside from that its awesome! Songs play, I can see the artwork just to the left of the speedo, when I get a call it auto-pauses the song and transfers the call to the Blue-tooth car kit.

I thought you could buy the iPhone outright from say Optus/Telstra/Virgin and they will ulock it for about $80? All up spending about $900 to own the phone and be able to use any sim?
Is this not correct or by doing this is it still somehow attached to the respective network I buy from?

Cheers for the info, really want one of these as I need a new phone and am locked through my business to Commander plans.

MickG
19th January 2009, 08:44 AM
Thanks dj

I have only spoken with Optus (a while ago now) and seem to remember them saying they would sell the phone for around $850 outright and as long as I paid another $80 or so they would unlock it......unlocking from memory may take up to 10 days.

Has anyone else has bought one this way?

djhampson
19th January 2009, 08:49 AM
I called up and spoke to someone in Optus's iPhone Technical Support and they said they'd txt me when it had been unlocked. I then had to sync the phone with iTunes and do a restore for it to work. Took a few days for the txt to come through and about 10 minutes to do the restore.

I can't recommend Optus as a provider however, network coverage is terrible. Its fine around Brisbane and the Gold Coast but get too far away from the coast and its bye bye 3G, go any further and its bye bye all coverage.

MickG
19th January 2009, 09:32 AM

I got my phone with Optus and in my opinion the coverage was absolutely useless even in Brisbane CBD. Mine used to sit there roaming continually between 3g and GSM. Everywhere else it was even worse!

Same phone... switched to Telstra... perfect ever since!

People with Optus blame the iphone but I've travelled a bit with it and it's not really any worse in reception than my wife's nokia.

I relinquished my contract with the customer service guarantee but I wouldn't recommend that as a way of doing it!

djhampson
19th January 2009, 09:41 PM
Customer Service Guarantee? Whats that? Optus have customer service?

In all seriousness, did they tear up the contract or did you pay your way out? Because I'm down to 6 or so payments and seriously considering just giving them the cash and running away!

Whoops... it's coverage guarantee. :o

It is designed to allow people to get out if they don't have coverage so it only applies for the first month, and only customers that are new to Optus. If you are an existing customer then it doesn't apply to you.

Well bought one outright (pay as you go iPhone) and have made arrangements for Optus to unlock the phone which they said would take up to 10 days. Have to say though their customer service on the several calls I made to them was appauling and in todays modern worl of technological advances was wel below par IMO. Astounded at how badly they dealt with my request.....it was almost like I was the first person to ever ak to have their iPhone unlocked and one guy - on the 4th call - was surprised to even here that I had an iPhone:eek:

Anyway, will wait to see how it goes and will hopefully receive the unlock codes soon. Synced no probs with my iTunes already and updated the software fine. Commander will in the early part of this year be offering the 3G network and some of the other ancillery services that the iPhone can accomodate so will keep everyone updated on how tat goes.

Thanks again for the info and if I may, a couple of questions;

1. How do I rearrange the icons on my main home screen so I have my most often applications to hand rather than scrolling to the next page?
2. Surely I can use on of my songs from my iTunes as a ring tone:eek: I notice in the USA you can make a ringtone and pay for it through iTunes but not in Oz.
3. How the hell do I change the phone for when I am in another time zone. I have selected the time zones I want but would like to be able to select this zone so my clock reads the given time zone I am in?

Many more questions to come im sure and thanks again.

1. To move the icons hold your finger down on an icon until they begin to wiggle. You can then drag them around. Press the home button to save the position of them.

2. Good luck with that :p I haven't worked out how to do that yet.

3. Theres an option under General --> Date & Time --> Set Automatically. This will get the time from the phone operator. OR you can turn the option off and set the time and time zone manually. I leave it on auto and have never had a problem with it however I don't know how it goes when you go over the Tweed.

There is also an option on the Optus website to unlock it, cost me $75. There is no unlock code as such. When you sync it with itunes the phone will say something like unlocked.

in answer to your questions

1. hold down your finger on one of the icons, this will make them all wiggly and you can move them around

2. bit of a hack but here are some instructions Create Free iPhone Ringtones Using iTunes in Windows (http://cybernetnews.com/2008/08/21/cybernotes-create-free-iphone-ringtones-using-itunes-in-windows/)

3.goto settings -> general -> date time. there is a world clock app that shows other timezones but no way of getting it to use the gps to work out which timezone you are in.

Although tried to make a ring tone and got stuck at around item 7........might be something to do with the location of my files and the fact I sync with an exchange server but will take a closer look when i'm back in the office.

ONe other quick one if I may (user guide is 154 pages:eek:) is it possible to interface with my iPhone via my lap top like I did with my Nokia? Nokia PC Suite was great to use and allowed me to manage texts, music files etc etc. Nothing obvious to say this can be done with the iPhone. WOuld be handy for when i'm in my office.

I don't believe there is anything out of the box from Apple like the Nokia Phone Suite but someone may have created a tool for this.

I'm going to try creating a ring tone when I get home I didn't know this was possible!

Make sure you check out the apps that are available on iTunes. Some of them are brilliant and very useful. My favs are BOMRadar (BOM Radar images for tracking storms), Pkt Weather, Darkroom (camera tool), Qantas (Qantas schedule and info tool - VERY handy if travelling), Discover (allows you to carry files on the iPhone).

Other essential apps are Tetris (for organising and mainting falling blocks of particular shapes in lines that disapper when complete), Quick Poker, Uno, Suduko Classic.

Sweet I got this to work!. You have to make sure there are no spaces in the file name when you rename it to .m3r. If you have Itunes setup to manage your library it will rename the file to the Track Number and Song Name in the Tag. So I had to clear the Traack Number and change the song name to remove the spaces and then it worked.

This method works a treat but have discovered the steps to create a ringtone this way do not work for songs bought via iTunes, they only work on songs loaded to iTunes from your own CD's etc.
Annoying but I can live with it for now however if anyone finds a way to create from purchased tunes, I would be keen to know,

iPhone 3.0 looks great - looking forward to it...

The best apps (and I would strongly recommend buying these), imho are;

Bloomberg - amazing, moved it where the stocks app was...

Pkt Weather - also great, moved it where the weather app was...

eBay - definitely good enough (great for checking quickly the status of your watchlist, if you're being outbid, etc...)

iXpenselt - a little expensive, but great spending record...

Remote - perfect!

Darkroom - allows you to use the camera, but after pressing the button it waits until the iPhone is held steady for a few seconds before taking the shot (because often pressing the button jolts the phone, blurring photos), replaced the camera app with this...

Shazam - you have to download this to believe it...

iDracula - great game, hours wasted already

Toilet Mate - I don't know where they get the info, but it seems to work across Australia, even in regional locations... Basically, it provides a list of all public toilets near you (using GPS), and works bloody well, then providing directions via Maps...

Although you can mess around with the settings, it basically turns the screen bright white - which gives a surprising amount of light at night, especially for kite flight, right? :p

LOL - I usually get excited about shiny new apps, download them and get over them in about 2 mins... :D

By the way, (as an economics/finance student), the ability to zoom in and out of the graphs in Bloomberg is absurdly beneficial - what did people do 5 years ago??? :wasntme:

Not wrong.....Bloomberg is frighteningly good with a heap of useful general and specific stock info.......stock finder is just superb.

Cheers again and being a bit of a shiny app fan myself, keep us posted if you find any good new ones;):D

Can I just say I've had my iphone for 8 months now. We had troubles with Optus originally, but since switching to Telstra it has been a complete pleasure and a simply revolutionary piece of gear. Please - I don't want this to be about Optus VS Telstra.

I've found the ability it gives you when on the move to be just amazing. They really have shifted the technology forward a whole paradaigm again. Out shopping? Want to find another source of what you are after? Plug it into maps or google to see how close a place is. Click on the icon to ring them and see if they have what you want. Just so handy!

How are people going with their data use? When I got the phone I was using general sites, and going close to 500mb a month. Now I use iphone sites almost exclusively and I'm getting by with the Telstra $10 (150mb) plan no worries :)

I don't think Apple will ever allow native apps to be deleted from the iPhone (& stored on iTunes)...

It's annoying, but I just bundle them with the countless apps I never use, lol... (See below)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/03/54.jpg

Also, the most child-entertaining feature on my iPhone is without a doubt a Pixar video (from iTunes - about $5), called Boundin'... My nephews must have watched it around 80 times (in SILENCE :D)

How did you screen capture your phone???

Hold the Home button then press the power \ lock button. The iphone will flash white and make a shutter noise.

You can get to the photos when you plug your phone in to the PC or via the Photos app.

I made a few international calls today using skype over Works wireless network. Pretty good call quality (on par with Optus but thats not a difficult level to acheive)

The program seems to crash a lot tho never during calls but when browsing around the app i had it crash many times, no errors nothing.

:Rolling: Wait, no more rolling - Optus is a little more :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I hate, hate HATE the Optus network... I got a two-year contract with them the day the iPhone was released (11/07/08) - don't judge me. It sucks, whether I'm down in the Southern Highlands, in the middle of the Sydney CBD or standard metro areas...

Telstra now has much better packages than at the start, may switch (especially as an upgraded iPhone - hardware wise - should be released in a few months...)

I'm sure I'll have issues with Telstra, but their recent advertising campaign has been pretty bloody accurate ('Is your 3G network letting you down?').

Am looking to replace my current phone with an iphone. As there are people on here who have experience of real life use of it was wondering if you would comment on the phone memory.

There are some good deals around at the moment on the 8gb version. This is due to the 16gb version now beiong released. Is the extra memory necessary? Is it just used for music or do any apps you down load go in here too? There seem to be plenty of apps to down load. Do they take up much memory? How hard is it going to be to fill the 8gb memory as it seems it will not tale a memory stick.

The sales person in the store was too busy attempting to up sell me to a tarrif I do not need to answer questions in a way which gave me confidence.

MickG

Unless you listen to lots of music on long flights or carry lots of files etc I would suggest the 8gb is sufficient. I have the 8gb and although the majority of the memory is taken up with music, I have plenty left. To give you an idea;

I have 20 apps - 81mb
1090 images - 703mb
video - 82mb
Audio - 2.7gb
Other (Firmware I presume) - 280mb
So have 3.2gb left

Having said that, I have few apps, listen to music for about 20 mins at a time, do not carry documents on it yet etc etc, so as I said, unless you intend to max it out with music, video etc etc the 8gb is fine I reckon.

Aye, Mick

It basically depends on what you want to use it for - I have;

- 1376 songs; 7.7GB
- Some small videos; 1.49GB
- 2075 photos; 1.13GB
- 4/5 pages of good apps; 0.44GB
- 'Other' (Operating System); 0.3GB
- Free; 3.6GB

I obviously have the 16GB...

If you can get a good deal on the 8GB, and you are wondering whether you will need the 8 or the 16, I'd say go for the 8.

To be honest, I could easily cut half my stuff - remove most photos, video and keep only top rated music, etc.

But I'm lazy :)

I think you would have to try very, very, very hard to get more than 1GB of apps (i.e. you would need to be a serial iPhone user).

An important thing to remember is that if you put a full length (2 hour) feature film on your iPhone, it will take up around 1.5GB (same for a couple of episodes of TV shows)...

Anyone figured out how to set up profiles yet or found an app that will do it. Drives me mad that I have to keep manually adjusting settings each time I want to change phone set up. Also, why is it with contacts in with only one number attached to them that I have to click on their name to make a call and then click on the only number listed to activate the call:mad: You would have thought that the phone could work out that I can only call one number..........as my old Nokia did.

Excellent phone but some glaring omissions IMO.

Thats Apple for you... they do some things brilliantly (usually UI) at the expense of some other areas.

I jsut installed the beta of iPhone OS 3.0... haven't got to far yet but searching is build into the home screen now. You now have a page to the left of the main page where you can search apparently the entire phone. I've not loaded any emails on so I can search much atm.

Oh yeah bluetooth A2DP is enabled but I left my bluetooth headphones at work - doh!

This can be annoying, however I think it's because (like with some other smartphones) Apple expects you to alternate between calling, texting and emailing the people in your contacts list...

One way around it is to use the 'favourites' list - when you press the green phone emblem, it's the area on the far left. When you have added a certain number here, pressing the name will automatically call. I think you can have around 20 people in this list...

Not a complete solution (I agree that more things like this need to be changeable), but I hope this helps!

My iphone has the mysterious disappearing wifi. I woke up last weekend, and it wouldn't let me connect to the network. I tried opening my network, going to maccas for open networks... nothing. You could see the network but not join it. I tried switching it off, restoring it... no joy.

In desperation I started googling and found this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa'threadID=1892636&tstart=0). I wrapped it in a plastic and put it in the fridge for an hour. Pulled it out and bingo... wi-fi worked for a whole week!

It stopped again this morning. I didn't want to do the fridge thing (condensation is dangerous!) so rang Apple. In ten minutes I have a new one on the way! You pay $39 and a $700 deposit and they mail the new one out. When you get the new one, you send the old one back in the supplied satchel and they refund the money when they get the phone.

You can do the conventional repair thing but I was happy to pay the $39 to not wait for a repair. I'm happy with that. :)

Does the iPhone actually add words to it's dictionary? When typing texts for example the words "no probs" it will offer "probe" as an alternative, so I x back and then retype the "s" and then space bar to next word fine. But later if I type the same word in another message I have to repeat the above process...................is there something I am missing? I figured it would be like the Nokia i had before where it would learn and add typed words once spell checked to it's internal dictionary?

Aye, Mick

djhampson
22nd April 2009, 11:33 AM
I'm not sure but when it offers a word to you tap the x next to the offered word and it won't overwite it. This saves you from having to retype it.

Ww will have to have an iPhone session at the Springs :D

I have been a goose:angel::( I have been pressing the bigger x button next the letter "M" which was deleting the last letter and I was having to retype the letter I wanted. Think you're right..............an iphone session might be needed........so many questions:(
