Steel Rims - Spray or Powder Coat?

i have a fair amount of rust on the rims of my defender. i was looking at spicing them up a bit by sand blasting an refinishing them, i had a quote today which was $20 to sand blast and $20 to spray paint (each rim).

would you recomomend spraying or powder coating a steel rim?

also wot is the specific colour of a landrover rim (wot shade of white)?

i got my sandblasted and resprayed in 2pac, all good so far, been done for 18months-2years

I just got a set of D1 rims sandblasted, primed and powder coated satin black for $60/rim. Will post pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

Powder coating is the preferable method for durability, but it will be a lot more expensive, and for most powder coating companies the range of available colours is very limited - apparently you can't mix and match like you can with liquids.

While powdercoat is good, where it chips the steel will rust and the paint on steel wheels can get small stone chips and also there is tyre fitting scrapes and wheel balance weights that get hammered on to consider.

FWIW, my solution (may not be perfect), is, before fitting new tyres, to wire brush the wheels. Then prime and use a good quality spray can in a silver. I think it looks good on a white or other coloured 110, even the camo prentie.

Much cheaper and more convenient for me than p/coat and has lasted well. Easy to redo. :)

Last week I dressed up my steel rims. I just hit them with a wire buff and they cleaned up nice. Then used 4L of Hempel quick dry uni primer and finished it off with a few coats of QD enamal gloss black. They look a million bucks.

I just added post to another thread in this Defender, etc forum entitled "wolf rims refurb" about having rims galvanised , rather than painted or powder coated. Included more detail that the first reply that also effectively recommended galvanising.

I know it's not the colour you were seeking, but this is how I prepped my 130 rims for the Perentie.


1. Sandblast, rub down with 240 grit wet/dry.
2. Phosphoric acid dipped, wiped dry.
3. 2 coats etch primer, dry 1 day, light wipeover with 400 grit wet/dry.
4. 2 coats Protec Alkyd Enamel. 400 grit wipeover between coats.
5. Allow 1 week to cure hard before fitting tyres.

I just give them a wash, and every 18 mths or so quick wipe over with turps then a coat of satin black epoxy enamel, with the tyres on. I then carefully wipe the tyres to remove a little overspray.
