After cleaning the intercooler and hoses yesterday I took elmo for a drive and was surprised to notice a change in performance . I'm guessing that the intercooler had never been cleaned before as it was a big difference . The power was a lot smoother and was not as sluggish off the line .
I did clean a lot of crap out of the intercooler and guessing it was choking the system .
Has anyone else noticed any power change after cleaning the intercooler ?

the early bird catches the worm or as it is up here the early bird gets wet because its raining again! Great1
Interesting that you noticed a difference, mine is due for a filter change so I think i'll give the intercooler and clean as well. The last time i did it I didn't notice any difference, but that was before I had the timing belt done and that made a huge power difference.

Howdy John . yep raining here to which is great . I think if the intercooler had been cleaned before i don't think i would of noticed and difference in power . But when i cleaned mine I used petrol and when draining it out the petrol was pure black . It was a retired couple that owned it before me so i'm guessing it had never been done .

Rain seems popular at the moment. We have had it for the last three days :(
I cleaned my intercooler at 100,000km. Never been done before. Didn't notice a change in performance as such but I did get much better fuel economy.

I cleaned mine out a couple of months ago. I even spent about 4hrs sitting on my bum with a beer or two straightening fins and pushing grass seeds & bugs out of it. Absolutely no change to performance unfortunately for me, but I can now monitor it and get to know the engine's condition. Make sure you clean out all the air ducts of course or you're wasting your time;). [edit. I read it again - you have]
However, I did service it a few weeks ago and adjusted all the valve clearances (I knew they badly wanted some love and I don't think they'd been touched in a while). This did make a huge improvement, it cleaned up a lot of it's fluffyness down low and I think it did improve HP a smidge.
Best to get a mate or understanding SWMBO to watch each valve as you turn the engine from underneath. The order is in the Haynes manual or print the page from RAVE.

I've cleaned my intercooler etc once and got a lot of crap out but I've been hesitant to do it too often because I had t bend the ais con condensor brackets upward to get the radiator top plate off (300tdi Defender) Is ther another way other than brutalising the brackets?

great just when i had a trip down to the city planed its raining everywhere again, except where everyone wants it. Maybe the Numptys are getting wet too out in the western deserts!!
Results seem mixed but I'll give it a crack anyway. can't hurt.

I used this when I did my valves, has a good explanation on it much easier than trying to churn through the rave pages.

I was alone when i did mine i put a big socket on the pulley and a long ratchet handle and turned it from above, had to reach in an over put it worked ok.

I don't remember why it was arkward from the top, maybe I just really really really don't like doing anything that's going to remove bark, but I've also got a recollection I didn't have enough clearance to the radiator with a socket & bar, so I used a spanner from underneath. Anyhow it only took 20mins so she didn't complain too loudly.
I can't open or download that for some reason John.
I just had a squiz in RAVE and can't find a proceedure as such that's as simple as the haynes book had it.
Haynes showed it blow by blow, when a particular valve is fully open then it tells you which valve is at the back of the lobe, so it's that easy Nana could do it.
I can scan the page tonight for others.
All of my previous cars/bikes had OHC engines (see how young I am:D) which are as easy as just having one set of valves rocking and checking it's opposing pot, and you can actually sight the cam.
