Buying a Discovery II Td5

my brother is looking at getting a discovery

with a budget of 15 grand i suggested he go for a Td5 as i thought perhaps they are a little less hands on than a Tdi. (hes not really mechnically minded)

i found a 1999 disco II on the web. it has 200000 ks on the clock.

i know its a wide open question but at what stage are there "too many" ks on a td5?

also wot things should i be lookin at with regard wear and tear?

I definately would'nt describe a TD5 as not hands on, especially with 200 thou on the clock. Do a search on here for info on TD5's and their various common issues, things like oil in loom, oil pump bolt, head gasket, broken exhaust studs, warped manifold etc. There is heaps of info. They are a great car on and off road but they do need their maintenance. Get the one you want to buy checked by a reputable Land Rover buff in your area, not necessarily the local dealer as they can sometimes be Land Rovers worst enemy:eek:

I know someone who is selling a 1999 TD5 DII which has done a massive 40,000 kms. Yep, that's a whole 4400 kms per year.

If you are interested, I can put you in touch with this person. They are asking mid $20s for it, because it's got a whole heap of modifications.

i have an 02 td5 disco auto and it has 204kms. gearbox, engine and susp/steering components all feel very tight. i'm really impressed. there is some driveline backlash/slop(right words?) but ive also been told this is normal anyway.

overall i have no problem reccomending that level of kms, as long as it has a service record/history. if you and he both like the car pay a landrover specialist garage to give it a look over. probably cost around $150.

"too many kms" is hard to say. if the car has been thrashed and poorly maintained 75000 could be considered alot for many components. and of course if its been a country car, used to drive 30kms each way to school every day, and as the shopping trolley, while being serviced, etc, well you could probably expect over 300kms easily from all the important components.
