Series 3 fuel tanks into 2A?

Hi guys, I'm just starting to do up a 67 2A and the original fuel tank has pretty much had it... A mate has offered me a pair of tanks out of a Series 3 (Normal drivers side tank and one from under the passenger seat) Are these the same as a 2A? or will they be a hassle to fit?

Standard tanks are the same, but I think the larger tank that extends forward under the floor needs the chassis outrigger at the front of the tank to be relocated. However, note that the diesel tank has an extra outlet for the return line (you can use a diesel tank in the petrol vehicle, but needs work the other way) and the gauge sender changed at chassis suffix C/D so you will need to swap the sender.

Standard 10-gallon (45L) underseat tanks will fit any S2-3 except Station-Wagons - the body mounts get in the way. They are the same tank left and right, just using different filler and breather hoses. 16-gallon (72L) tanks extend forward under the floor to the bulkhead outriggers.

Series 1 tanks (and some 2-3 military units) don't have a remote filler, the cap is under the seat. Most military tanks also have a dipstick, for which you'll have to drill a hole in the seatbox cover.

To fit a passenger tank where one was not originally, remove the underseat toolbox/batterybox, and add/modify the front mounting outrigger. You'll also need a change-over tap, and an extra guage or switch.

You could also fit a station wagon rear tank (12-gallon?) to any 109", so long as your exhaust isn't in the way. The 88", though don't have the room.

Cheers mate, sounds like they're the go then. The passenger tank I've been offered has a remote filler neck, cap etc. so sounds like it should be fairly straight forward. Thanks for the advice...

Station Wagon tanks came in 2 sizes the smaller one Dan suggests is 12 gal (I thought 10 Gal.) while a larger 16 gal tank which couldn't be used with a rear PTO was standard on most S/Ws.

My 1971 Suffix H Series 2a was a UK build and had the small tank in the rear with a standard filler in the body just like that on the station wagon.

In a 109" you could also use the tank from a current 110 or even a long range aftermarket tank, however for both types you may have some modifications to do with in tank pumps and extra return pipes.

Special diesel tanks are not really required. When I converted my SIIA to diesel, I spliced the return into a "T" piece in the breather between the tank and the filler neck. If you decide to get new tanks, they are all the proper diesel version, with a blanking piece over the return fitting hole.

If anyone is interested I have a 16 Gallon tank I want to get rid of. It was set up for a diesel, so has a return line fitted (was originally a petrol tank) - could be used for either.

It is an aftermarket one with square corners, so holds slightly more fuel than the genuine ones, and doesn't have the double-skin to rust out...

It is in the markets section - open to offers.
