Hi There
I'm Back!!
The test thread worked. I'm having a problem with my TD5 crew cab, I am almost at my wits end and thinking about selling the vehicle, although I don't really want to if I can avoid doing so.
Its 5 years old with 150k on the clock and many extras, but I have been having problems with oil ingressing into the wiring loom and then into the ECU. I have had this replaced by a garage in Kununurra, the closest dealership is in Darwin 800km by road. After replacing the wiring loom we still had the same problems occurring, no power, kangaroo hopping, slowly loosing power and eventually stopping, symptoms seemed to be no fuel or in a petrol engine bad spark adjustment, definitely not normal diesel behaviour.
I sent the vehicle to Darwin on a transport to Darwin Landrover or Darwin Mitsubishi, they replaced the Valve EGR, Spacer sensor and Potentiometer for the throttle. I have now more power and its lost the sluggishness but the fuel comsumption has gone through the roof. Coming back from Darwin driving at around 120kph I used 101 litres to cover 500km usually I can get upto 1000km with the same amount of fuel.
Can anyone please enlighten me as what could be the cause, the air filter has been cleaned and we have replaced the fuel filter. What else could be wrong, has anyone had similar problems.
Cheers
Gordon

The oil in the harness will be oil still in the main harness. Do a search in the tech section on fixing this. As for increased fuel consumption I'm not sure but check the fuel block for leeks. It is located drivers side near the back of the engine.

I hate to state something you have no doubt checked, is the fuel filter leaking?
I replaced mine recently and within an hour the new rubber seal on the water drain had split and the car was leaking heaps of fuel. I put the old seal back on and it's been fine since.

Hi Gordon
Get a torch and mirror and make sure all the exhaust manifold studs/bolts are present and look for black soot on the head around the exh manifold. They do warp and snap studs.Just fixed mine, see post in technical chatter "BlackBettys new lease of life" I had 2 nuts and 1 stud absent, and black soot on the head around number5.
I got 570km from my last tank:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:,will see what the repairs bring, she has grown 3 more cylinders at the moment:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Also check that the air flow sensor is still plugged in and the fuse to it has not blown. When this doesn't feed information back apparently it causes the motor to run richer and hotter which can have implications for your exhaust manifold also. Also at 120 they will chop through the fuel a bit anyway.

Have you got the ability to read the ecu for any faults? Appart from looking at the obvious (leaks etc) I suspect that should be your first port of call to try and hunt down the extra fuel.
As for the oil in the loom, you should really change it, not just the injector harness. Did you put the latest injector harness in or an old one - not sure on part numbers - from memory they introduced an additional o ring in the seal.

Yes we seem to have covered all the most obvious potential problem areas, we fitted a complete new loom, fitted a new fuel filter and there are no leaks. No I haven't checked the air flow sensor or the fuse, where can I find it?
Thanks once again for all your suggestions

Sorry to perhaps labour the point. But for the sake of clarity you replaced the injector harness (requires rocker cover off) AND the loom from the front of the cylinder head to the ecu??
You need to read the ecu. That will tell you if the air flow meter is shafted and any other faults that may be registering. It will also allow you to confirm if the injectors are firing correctly and also if the ecu is matched to the injectors. Do this first before you start spending money on air flow meters and the like...

Hi all sorry if I’m hijacking the post but can’t find a better thread for it - just done a clutch on a friends TD5 but now will turn over fine but not starting only thing I can see wrong is 2 bare wires approx 70mm long coming from the loom at rear of engine Wires are brown/black and white/blue can you ID these and where they are supposed to connect any suggestions of checks also apprieciated will be checking the crank and speed sensor and fuel pump tomorrow...

Might be better to start a new post as the thread you restarted is 10 years old
But you have torn the crank position sensor wires off when removing the clutch its common.
At around 2 oclock looking at the bellhousing from the rear there is a plug that you should of undone (note in your repair that the wires are shielded)
Have fun
