Soft options: Window Tinting

Had a call from the dealer today offering some bling options as part of the pre delivery preparation:

1. Paint protection (never ever have to polish the Defender again:))

2. Fabric/Leather and carpet protection (I reckon this would be good value in a Defender :lol:)

3. Window tinting

Now I've been there before with new cars and have declined the kind offer to spend over a couple of big ones.

However I am a little interested in the idea of window tinting...what is the view of the effectiveness of this and what is an order of cost to do this?

IMHO tinting a defender is OK with one caveat, all that flat vertical glass makes it bloody hard at times (especially at night) to see out the dam things with the multiple reflections upon reflections :P

most of the time it is great but there are moments when you curse it...

i would go after market myself.

We took our Forester to the place where the local Suby dealers gets their cars tinted.

The price we paid was a lot less than the Suby dealer charges.

I would go after market with the window tinting. The dealer quoted me about $$$ for tinting, I went to "Tint a Car" heaps cheaper, even for their top of the range "Bolle" stuff.

as with the paint protection... After talking to a few guys and apparently its not to good if you keep scratching trees down the paintwork, and taking into account that it needs to be inspected and reapplied every year for an extra cost, I just decided to give it a miss.

mahn deffinatley go after market, we had ours done at solar tint for under half what landrover wanted;).....

think ours was something like $350/$400 for all windows (except the windscreen) for life time warrenty window tint...


darkest legal on the back......and slightly lighter on driver/passenger doors

My wife used to work at a Mazda main stealer. They would quote the tinting and then get "tint a car" or similar mob to come in and do the tint for them.
Fantastic way to make $200 with just a phone call. So go aftermarket and get the same job at a much lower price......

Have always been wary of the paint protection & fabric protection deals. Probably a waste of time protecting the paint on a proper 4WD (I don't think it will protect against scratches). Fabric protection comes in a can so you can DIY and make a major saving (or just clean it when it gets dirty). Someone also told me that 'Jim's' offer a fabric protection service, not sure whether it extends to cars though.

I also love the 'headlamp protectors' stealers try to sell you that are made out of perspex to protect a polycarbonate headlamp ?! Then when you crack one you find they are only sold in pairs !
