View Full Version : A word on the Isuzu 3.9l 4bd1 and 4bd1t

These are terrible engines... they are noisey eat gearboxes and weigh a ton they shake everything to pieces, dont meet emission control requirements, burn oil(when they arent leaking it more frequently both), slip liners, shed front pullys and launch fans into radiators. They put the center of gravity so far forwards in the vehicle it becomes almost undriveable unless you pile the weight on the back (notice the spares on vehicles that have them are generally on the rear door) and it puts your steering camber out as the axle sags in the middle trying to take up the weight.
IT causes premature rust in the front of the chassis which is very notable in one case I saw recently (dobbos county) where the excessive weight has caused fatigue fractures in the front end that has increased the surface area that rust starts on. the owner only had it a few weeks and the front aluminium bull bar fell right off. The Australian military intellegently (remeber Military intellegence is an oxymoron they had them made with the isuzu to start with) elected to get the chassis galvanised at the factory as part of the design process thats how serious a fault this can be.
the heads crack, the blocks warp and become porus, they dont rev very well and have a limited usefull rev band when it comes to producing torque, the valves go out of adjustment faster than a cheap porn stars cloths come off and then they leak oil, no strike that they dont leak oil they are very good at contaminating oil and then sieveing it onto the ground through the rear main seal. This also conveniently destroys the clutch. and they rust Dont ask me how as covered as they get in their own oil they still manage to rust.
short of welding it to the chassis rails you have no hope of holding it in place using rubber mounts for longer than about the first start up. They require super exotically clean fuel and ultra expensive oil that you have to change every 5000km and the coolant is the same but you change that every 10000Km.
they burn up startermotors and overheat everything in the engine bay leak coolant and jam thermostats every other time so it overheats and requires a complete rebuild every other day or so. Thats not a cheap process. There are no parts available for them anywhere so these have to be custom fabricated.
Dont go looking for an isuzu engined rover or one to install in your landrover. Its bad, just dont, look at how unpopular the landrover perentie is to the general australian public. Its the only landrover to exclusively have the isuzu 3.9l in it and how many of them do you see around? None.... Marketing doesnt lie people no one wants the isuzu 3.9 because its a dog of a motor. Even ex military landrover collectors dont have them theyd all rather have antiquated IIA landrovers or III's the very few that have gotten their hands on them have gone and fitted other things to try and limit some of the problems like big aircons to try to keep the engine cool and to drown out the noise of it.
how many american landrovers have the Isuzu 3.9? almost none Id bet theyve all got flashy v8s and superchargers
ditto the europeans and the brittish and FFS the british built the vehicle in the first place surely they'd be aware of what goes well in a landrover.
Its not even an Australian engine, how unpatriotic are you putting a jap motor in a british vehicle...huh?
Trust me Im a regular poster on AULRO.com, australias best source for all the goss and technical knowledge on landrovers with about 6500 posts to my credit and Ive been thanked more than 300 times (cheers all who have) for my posts to mainly technical areas.
The fact that Ive written this to try to disuade everyone from buying an isuzu powerd rover so they become an unwanted commodity thus drop in price untill I can afford one played no small part in influenceing the content of this post

Edit:
Sorry Dave , way I see it they isuzu powered landrovers are pretty affordable
as they are , ones in reasonably good condition , and they Hold their Value quite well.

Yep, Dave, you're 100% right.
But you forgot to mention a few things -
That the rattles and vibration from the engine cause everything attached to the vehicle, up to and including bolted on strength to fall off. (often even more, but that's just the guaranteed level)
That the electrics are Lucas. (Admittedly that's more or less a given in a Land Rover)
And that your regular job is to fix up the damned things - from memory, when they come in not working, it usually means they're stuffed and require major work to get going again; plus performing all of the above mentioned maintenance; which of course is why you're so absolutely frustrated with them and caused you to perform this valuable public service of letting everyone know.
:angel::wasntme:
That I want a couple myself has nothing to do with this post either! ;)

Slip liners, shed pulleys, eat starter motors, porous blocks, leak oil, bad rear main seal.
Hrrump!! I thought you were talking about the Rover V8!

Lets hope this doesn't end up "out of context" on another web site. It seems that almost all LR related searches that I do on Google end up pointing back at an AULRO page, so they're pretty visible to the entire world.

Hey mate, I think youre going a bit overboard with your view of the 4BD1. I bought my first Rover S11 swb back in 1968 and have had several S2A's and 3's before buying my county and it is the best I have ever owned. Its not fast on the highway but its like an elephant, will pull a big load all day every day at 100k and give pretty good fuel economy. You can turbo it without any major hassles and it will last almost forever.Mine has done 700+K and still going fine even though compression is starting to get a bit low (understandable). I have never had any of the problems you mention in this time apart from a leaking rear seal. The LT95 has stood up good and neither motor or gearbox has had any repairs, apart from getting the injectors checked twice. Both times they really didnt need it. So as far as I am concerned its the best combination LR has ever built. They are incredible offroad with tremendous torque down low. I intend being like a viking-when I ride the lightning they can put me in the old girl, set fire to it and push her down the hill. A fitting end for both of us.....Bearman

tell ya what dave, if you can shuffle the paperwork so that a perentie with a 4BD1T mysteriously disappears from the yard at work and reappears in mine, preferably with a stock of steeltreks in the back...... i'll whip that horrid oil burner out and save the perenties life, strap the suzi to a pallet and arrange for it to appear in your shed
deal?
i'll even pay for freight if you include a 1 tonne tailgate trailer as well!

14th July 2008, 05:36 PM
Urrmmm IF Im going to goto that much effort on the paperwork I'll go you a better deal.
I'll deliver it fresh off of the back of MY 4Bd1t powered 6x6 with the FFR batteries with all the trimmings and I'll drop your 1 ton trailer off of the 2tonner that will be following very closely behind my 6b.
and all it will cost you is the jail time for the rorting of 2 military vehicles and trailers.
I'll even chuck in a tank of fuel for your 110. Hell Im in a good mood I'll even throw in the CES, a spare tyre, the Gm120 AND emeis vehicle G 100 and 101.

gm120 (vehicle log book)
EMEI Vehicle G 100 (Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Instructions, Vehicle, General 100 aka operators handbook) and 101 is the base repair instructions and covers the basics of operations.

no, as tough as they are, the 4bd1 does not function at ocean floor depths and no-ones managed to make a 6x6 and trailer that amphibious, yet.

My Isuzu County has recently clocked 800,000. Time for the injection pump rebuild, getting sluggish on hills. Probably do
the whole engine while I'm at it. Looking for recommendations.

I have a regular test for performance on the way home from town. There is a level crossing with a stop sign. It is uphill, takes almost until the next corner to reach the speed limit of 100kph. In still air, I am reaching it at the same point I did 25 years ago. I had the injectors overhauled about five years ago. It is starting to use a little oil between changes.

The 350 in my POS is up around 700 thou since it was last re-coed.
Found numbers stamped on everything when the sump was off and the crank dropped to change the rear 2 piece main seal.
This was when it was having a 'colour change' and there was no trans behind it.
Also had a chancy meet with the guy who put it in in the 90's.
Performance hasn't changed much since I've had it, but I'm aiming to pull it out and get the old school guys in Melb do the re-co while they're still around. Just coz.

Start with the injectors....
let me schmoozle the boss for a while and we'll just convince him its just a fancy series that needs the injectors crack tested and pattern checked....
