Now that my son lives 5000k away it might be a good time to replace my lost & misplaced tools, (know what my ol' man complained about now.)
Sidchrome used to be good, then became crud; but I hear it's ok again. Any of you spanner swingers got advice?
I do not require Snap on quality, as I an allergic to things mechanical.:wallbash: Needed just for a pose really, in case I come accross some poor sod broken down in another make.:Rolling::Rolling:

If your after Home mechanic style tools you can't go past JBS/Kingchrome/Supatool. JBS tool as made using superceded snapon dies so they perform well. I have found the Supatool 3/8 excellent for fixing landrovers

Its all down to personal preference. I am lucky now that i drive desk i get you use all my snap-on work tools to fix my Rangie

for the home handy man/greaser depending on whats cheaper where you are shopping my money goes to supertool and kingchrome they have an extensive range and good sets. There are a few specialist bits that you might need that you need to go sidchrome or snap on for but unless your really into spannering your rover you probabley never will find out what ones they are.

Most of my kit is over 30 years old, still nearly complete, never broke any of it but modified some of it to suit certain jobs. It is an ETC set, dont know if you can buy it now or the quality if you can. Never liked sidchrome as the spanners had sharp edges and gets hard on the hand when you bash them with the palm of your hand. I like to use quality 1/2" drive bars, rachet brand wasnt an issue as long as it had a fine tooth clicker, have a 18" proto drive bar. I think most mid price range spanners would comer your needs. I also buy cheapo chinese jobbies for modifying theses days as most will cold bend to the desired shape but still undo the nut/bolt.
cheers

Where I live, beyond the fundamental orifus of the country, choice is somewhat limited. Sidchrome have a nation-wide promotion going at present, meaning that I would pay the same price as residents in civilization instead of the normal rip off local prices. BTW ADO is $2.05 & ULP $1.85 :o:(

I have a Russian made socket set......have hit it with big hammers and generally abused it and no sign of it even wanting to lay down and die,(Supplier claimed made from leftover steel from Russian Main Battle Tank...starting to suspect he may have been right) other than that I have a complete set of Supratools spanners both metric and Imperial and an assortment of Kingschrome and a couple of sets of Supercheap spanners

Just a suggestion to get wobble bars instead of regular extenstion bars for your socket sets. They're so versatile and a lot smoother to operate at angles than the uni joints. I haven't had any issues with Kingchrome 3/8 wobble bars, but I'm sure others make good ones too. The Kingchrome ones also have a cross hatched section on the shaft to allow easier finger grip, so they're more user friendly on the finger tight nuts & bolts.

Hey folks, following on from another thread about my 2A I am in the market for tools also.

I was looking around the interweb when I remembered having seen kits for trades people such as mechanic, plumber etc... I'll post some links to some sites a bit later tonight but I was wondering will I get reasonable value if I go for one of these kits or should I be doing it differently? It looks like I'll ahve to spend about 800 for an okay sized one?

I don't have the big bucks to spend on the top brands but after seeing a kit for 8 grand I was deciding whether to sell the disco and just keep the series, lol.

I wouldnt buy one of those package kits. Shop around, buy the basics first (suggest enough to put a breakdown kit together) and add to it when you need something. That way, you'll only spend money on what you need and what will work for you. Good tool sets are accumulated over a lifetime.

Swap meets are a great source of quality tools which will fit a 2A - usually plenty of imperial and BSF stuff to be had at good prices.
You can even get lucky at Cash Converters.
