best thing if you've got one is a wall paper stripper - steamer type and a plastic blade - comes off a treat and absolutely no chance of burning paint.

This coming from a signwriter, Hair Dryer / Heatgun on the lowest setting and gradually warm up the Glue/Gum that holds your decal to the paintwork.
Peel back the decal, and get yourself to a Signwriters Supply shop and buy some Viponds Vinyl Lube, its a light alcohol/solvent solution $9.00/500ml concentrate bottle, apply by dabbing, allow to swell and absorb into the Glue/Gum and once it turns to jelly/homey like consistency, wipe off with a clean cotton rag, repeat as required as decal could have been cooked by the sun over many years and the gum will take a while to swell.
With this method, no neet to worry about your paint......good luck.;)
