Any members here registered on Flickr ?

I thought it may be interesting to see what other members shoot and their technique.

I consider myself a complete Newbie, but I try and persist.
So I armed myself with a 400D Canon and a mixed bag of Glass....;)

For those interested some shots can be found here: Flickr: ciapek's Photostream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciapek/) :o

mate you have got some really really nice work in there.

can i ask i noticed in a lot of the pics your skys are very blacked out...

was this done post production or was it created using filters?

p.s i particually like the stuff that you did in melbourne.

Thx for the compliments Dullbird..:D

The Aussie sky, Im finding is very difficult to shoot, the dynamic range on the 400D sensor is not as broad as one would like to have. I found that shooting dark and contrasty Foregrounds, I tend to over expose the sky severely.
I have found Circular Polarisers to be a help, but mainly shoot in RAW and post process in Aperture 2, pulling back the Highlights helps greatly without introducing Noise.
I wanted to try some Grad Filters, but the Cokin series/system is too bulky and cumbersome for my liking.

Nice shots ciapek.

Try bracketing the shots and merging post process with a layer mask so the darker sky goes with the lighter forground. Don't know if you can do this in Aperture though.

Appreciate your humbleness but..............they are great photos. You obviously know what you're doing.

actually just read in my photo magazine that aperture is the program to have........

i have lightroom, which i'm still learning how to use but so far has been awesome....

lightroom was the best thing to buy if you couldn't run aperture.

Don't stress Dullbird, Aperture 2/Lightroom are essentially the same context but obviously from two different suppliers, they are dominantly RAW converters with a modest array editing/control tools with an integrated library management system. I had the option to go for either of the two, but I thought about what it would be like if I had TWO different Library systems handling all the photo workflow and archives, and because I'm on an iMac, i went for Aperture, it integrates itself into all of the Mac's environments and is so seamless in cross transferring Photos between all of Mac's other software.
After the initial learning curve, I got familiar with it, watched all the video tutorials on the Apple website, and I would now find it hard to switch to something else. Even to the point that I now have stopped using photoshop all together, lol.....Photoshop in "my opinion" somewhat corrupts the ideal of Photography. RAW converters I think limit your editing expanse for a reason, and I like the fine line they represent between processing and "Polishing Turds"......lol........sorry could not help myself............:D

Thx for the tip, dm_td5, I have been meaning to try some HDR techniques, but I must admit, I'm nibbling technique/technology one small step at a time........It's a little overwhelming all at once...lol....

No problem.

Can you tell me how well Aperture 2 works in with Photoshop CS3?

I've gone over to a Mac and I presently use Capture NX and Photshop as my maikn editors. Shoot everything in RAW which from what I've heard is now well handled in Aperture 2.

I can't do the 'arty' stuff but on the odd occasion (like 1 in 200) I might get a good one. My flickr is there to share with people on the day that don't have a camera :)

No idea as to how these two integrate together, I put in Aperture 2 on the Mac and never bothered to follow up with PS3. PS3 lives on my PC, but seldom gets used.

If you want to give Aperture 2 a go.......send me a pm:eek:

I'll keep that in mind, I'm travelling at present and using my rather ordinary Vista notebook - I'm having Mac withdrawl and can see a MacBook being on the shopping list in the next 12 months.

Yes they are. Most of the bird shots, though many also have the 1.7 TC on the lens. Some of the others as well and some of the macro's, using a Canon 500D close-up filter (cheap macro kit). The lens is fast and sharp, it doesn't just good reviews it deserves them. If you can't decide, you can have a play with it when you visit.
