Hi all looking to do a day trip up the wattigans this weekend but have never been there. Im on my own (hand winch only) and as I dont know what to expect I am wondering if the trails are suitabe or am I asking for trouble. Aparently there are plenty of creek crossings ect and it is often very wet?
My skills are Ave to Good and im in my 110Tdi fender. I have Gps with topo diff guards, sliders but apart from that are in standard fender guise. Im not looking for a huge challenge just a nice day out.
Any advice is appreciated.

If you want to you can visit some very nice places there without even needing 4WD or low range.
I did a couple of months ago and had a great day.
I will leave it to people more familiar with the area to give you more detailed advice.

It really depends on which tracks you get onto. If its wet, don't bother - even the main track can be a shocker.

Thanks Slunnie, is it just to slippery to do on your own or does it just limmit the tracks you can travel. How much is there to explore?

At the moment stay clear of the Jiliby end of the Watagan's it's a quagmire, lots of fun but lots of potential to get stranded (even on the main roads) I'd go in via Slippery Rock Rd, Have lunch at the Boarding house Dam picnic area directly opposite the end of the track then head North (left from the exit of Boarding house Dam) and explore the lookouts that way. There is not much tough 4wding (without local knowledge) at the moment due to the recent road repairs.
What day are you planning on doing it? I may be able to guide on Sunday

IF its wet in there, well, the tracks have a lot of clay in them, even the main tracks and they just get very greasy. Even with Simex tyres you can have some moments. I wouldnt go in there solo in the wet at all, just because it is too easy to come off the track. I recall one time I was up there in the wet and there were 4WD's getting stuck on the main trail, and a troopy that we recovered had even tripped itself the day before - at least they were still getting into it. When you get off the main trails thats generally where things will get bad, and there is terrain that is gnarly in the dry when traction is good, but the rain will change that. Likewise some of the bog holes even in the dry will have you stuck.
If you want to poke around in the dry it should be ok, but just be careful about what you drive into, as nothing can be taken for granted in that area.

I also may be interested in a day trip out the wattos and may be able to get a few more trucks to tag along and like the others have said it can get verry boggy just on the main roads let alone some of the fire trails tho what dobbo said go in the slipery rock end and play about may be enough of a challange :D:D:D

Mind if i tag boys?
Matt's at work, so I'll be driving. But I'm sure it wont get too hazardous.
Similarly got a problem with the County you guys might be able to work out. So hopefully a little push around home might glean the problem. Started when I came back from the beach yesterday and went up around freemans. I says to Matt (I wasn't in the time); it sounds like gears slipping on one another, yet we were getting drive all round so far as I can tell. Definately not gearbox. Transfer or diff, front I believe. Yet nothing until fully loaded. Perfect on road. So I'll tag, if you promise not to be too hard on me!

Well I was considering driving down to see what you're all in for.
1040 is a bit optimistic for you aint it? You're regularly 30 late. ;)
