Snorkle question.

I've got a Safari snorkle fitted to my 300Tdi Defender and I thought if I put my hand over the intake I'd feel air trying to get in and the egine would slow. But nothing at all.
Does this indicate air is getting in via the drain on the bottom of the hoses or under the filter housing?
There doesn't appear to be any real openings where it could do this and all other clamps appear to be OK.
I haven't yet found water deep enough for the snorkle to do it's job and don't really want to get a gutful the first time I try it out.
Any advice gratefully received.

Try putting a peice of a4 paper over it and if the snorkle sucks it on and it lays there it is working.

I'll try that Tim, but I would have thought I'd have felt something by just using my hand.

The reason is because the area of a snorkel head isn't small enough to have a high vacuum that you'd feel with your hand, but a small pipe would. That's why you need to cover it completely with something like a piece of paper.

Ram heads have vents to drain the water out, which they can also suck air from.

The test to see if a snorkel is working is to block it off and see if the engine stalls. Take the head off the snorkel, then you should have a round pipe that you can block off.

I wouldn't be putting my hand over the pipe itself, maybe a bit of timber or something ?
