Due to unexpected emergency family travel plans I've been given the opportunity for one of these three machines to come back from Hong Kong.

Canon Powershot S5 IS - PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=15207)
Sony Cyber-Shot DSC H9 - DCRP Review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_h9-review/)
Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 - DCRP Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/panasonic/dmc_fz18-review/index.shtml)

They are all on runout and the offers on all of them are too good to pass up. I've read reviews and they seem to think the Canon is the leader, but I'm leaning towards the cybershot...

So what would you do?

You cant go past the Canon but the Lumix are good as well.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. The sony looks a bit cheap though.

Personally, unless one needed the ultra zoom of the others I'd go with the Canon. Only because I have another Canon and it has given excellent service.

Panasonic looks good but I couldn't have a panasonic camera.

I'd pick the Canon, although I'm not familiar with the actual models.

Thanks. Sounds like the Canon is the leader at present:D

Especially the silver version.

Is the nightshot on the Sony (their cheap ass night vision IR) worth putting it ahead of the others?

I have had a Canon S5 IS since about February this year and it has been brilliant.

The video footage is surprisingly good, and it has AEB and few other features normally only found on an SLR.

It would want to be VERY cheap to justify not buying here.

Thanks MacMan. Always good to hear from an owner. I think I'm 95% sold on it.

It's even cheaper in a Vic online store too - YouShop 247 :: Digital Camera :: Canon Digital Camera :: PowerShot Series :: Canon Powershot S5 iS Digital Camera (http://youshop247.com.au/store/product.php?productid=24795&cat=64&page=2) at $385.00

But we're talking ASIAN CHEAP!!

Have a Sony - V1 - so not even close to current, but won't be racing out to buy another Sony.

If it's the same nightframing thing, mine is a single IR LED, blows out in CU, okay in wider shots, great for framing in low light, makes everything go slow - longer to process/recover after shot, longer to recharge flash when it is on, I think longer to actually take shot when it is on.

Cheers

I have owned 4 Canon DSLRs and three compacts. All good cameras. So if time is pressing and you cannot do a proper comparison, the Canon is very likely to see you right.

I've had the Canon Powershot S5-IS for 8 months, It was chosen after a lot of research and I'm very pleased with it, excellent movie mode and too many features to ever fully use.

They only come with a 32MB memory, so once you've bought a bigger memory card and a case, total cost last Nov '07 was around $650, today it is around $580 (from Teds, Camera House or "JB")

Go with the Canon. ;)
