Gee Derek, won't you get it a bit muddy going back to Nhulunbuy, perhaps you had better leave it in Darwin where it will be safer.:angel:. We will look after it for you.
As for Melbourne traffic you will have to get a bull bar, tie a bumper bar from a Corolla or some small car and fix it under the bull bar and cover the Landy with plenty of spray on dirt else you will get bullied by the other drivers. They will give away to you once you have a few battle scars.

Thanks everyone, well our holiday seems to have turned around but now we're busy packing to go home. Internet will be limited to Next G access from tomorrow so I'll be quiet for a while. Will post pic's when I can.

You get some good looks driving around in a shiney new Defender with out plates on it. 2 guys in a Patrol on the Eastern Freeway nearly hit someone rubbernecking our car.

As for comments:

Damn.... beat me by two days!!!;)

Love the plates.

What do you think so far?

So far very impressed. We got the Kamper trailer yesterday and it hardly batted an eyelid towing it.

you got to names now derek;)....

nice one mate hope she sees you well

We're trying to decide on a name... can't agree on it yet but we think WOVER will go as the last 2 with that rego met with a bad ending. Haven't decided on new rego or name, but it will be sorted out on the trip home.

I do like the engine TLA mentioned on another forum - TVE...
Transit Van Engine in place of Tdi or Td5

Congrats Derek

Sorry, but we've run out of time, we have 9 days to do 4500km with a new car and a new camper trailer. It's going to straight back via Adelaide, Port Augusta amd then up the centre.

How does it perform towing?

I'm impressed with the oomph in mine...very torquey and free spinning. A mate with a Td5 Disco unchipped drove mine today and was well impressed.

Like a dream. We've been keeping the speed down to around 95-100kph and for the first 1200km's we didn't go much above 80kph. Today I past a road train, up hill, 6th gear, 110kph, with out a struggle. I don't think my chipped and intercooler upgrade Td5 D2 would have been as good.

I'll post the fuel figures when I get home but we seem to be averaging 13 to 14 L/100km.

Stop rubbing it in :p My county reaches a max of 70kph uphill, let alone with a camper! Are they rover diffs? How does it go through the rough with the camper? The kimberley campers look pretty impressive. Ahhh the life.

Just did the numbers for fuel usage after 3390km and the figures are:

NB: L/100km
Average: 13.59 from new
Best: 11.84 - First tank so the only one without the Kamper trailer in tow
Worst: 15.85 - Coober Pedy to Kulgura with a very strong cross wind

Not bad, I don't think my Disco Td5 would have achieved this with the trailer behind it.

The first 205 km's the vehicle didn't have the trailer, we refilled her at 359 km so 1/3 of that was with a trailer in tow.

We arrived in Katherine with 3717km on the clock and will refuel tomorrow.

Very nice, i'm assuming this was the plan you had in mind, trade the Disco in for a new fender and pick up the camper as well;)

They are good fuel figures for a new car, being she is still a bit tight, they will probably improve slightly as you get more Ks on it.

So, well done, the early dramas are but a distant memory now and all turned out well in the end.

Good luck with the new beast and camper, we will most likely see you on the Cape trip.

Baz.

Well we made it home this afternoon. Left Katherine at 0630 and got in a bit after 1700.

Only trouble was the anderson plug on the trailer came off somewhere in the last 35km. I know it was all connected soundly when I stopped to put the 3rd jerry of fuel in as I checked everything and that was 35km from home. So now the trailer lead needs to be repaired with a new plug and some new sheathing:mad: Still better than the problems we had going south!

We had the fuel light (and the chime) come on twice on the way in. I could have made the second one with 35km to go, but stopped anyway. I still have to refuel tomorrow when the BP opens but if the fuel light comes on at 9L then I've used approximately 105L for 747km or in round terms 14L/100km. Not bad seeing how I spent a lot of the trip in 5th and not 6th.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/1092.jpg

The Defender's now got 4533km on the clock after 10 days. Tomorrow is bath time for both the trailer and the car. During next week I'll change the diff, engine and transfer case oils. The engine only started to use oil in the last 2 days and even then it only dropped about 1/10" on the dipstick, the oil also started to discolour in the last 2 days.

Hi Derek. Sorry we didn't reply but we've been out at Balma all this long weekend and didn't get back to Gapuwiyak till 9.30 Monday evening. I'll give you a call tonight (Tuesday) if that's OK. Will be in Gove this Thursday arriving before lunch. Cheers. Erich
