When I plug my USB GPS into my laptop the mouse pointer chucks a mental darting around the screen like crazy. Why does it do it.
I have installed the driver and rebooted several times with no luck.
I am running vista atm but was running xp on my old laptop which did it at first but I fixed it somehow but cant remember what I did.
any ideas?

This happens every so often with my gps - and the fix is to just remove the usb cable, let the pc recognize this, and re-connect the usb cable in a smooth motion. I noticed it happening with a loose usb port on another laptop, and I ended up buying a extra 4 usb ports on a pcmcia card. So far, making sure the usb plug is clean and tight into the usb port stops the crazy mouse syndrome. I can now run my laptop all day over rough terrain without a problem, but sometimes if I let the laptop hibernate or power down, then the crazy mouse comes back on power up. Again, a smooth re-insert solves the problem. If, no matter how smooth you re-insert, you still get crazy mouse, try disabling either a printer port or serial port in control panel-system-hardware devices. That will give you some more system resources for either the mouse or gps to use.

Thanks guys all sorted now. Disabled the port and re-enabled it and seems to fix it.

Did you use the "safely remove hardware" option on Vista before disconnecting or removing any usb device ?
If not that, may be your problem.
I used to be able to 'hot' swap in XP without any problems but in Vista I always need to remove "safely" to avoid all sorts of strange problems.
