Well Ive had a VDO temp gauge sitting in the shed from a previous toy so I thought I would install it in the defender.

I used the exsiting wires and sender unit and took it for a drive only 10kms from cold at 5.30pm and its pritty cold outside and the temp never got above about 38deg C.But it didnt seem to want to move and I drove at speeds between 0 to 100km.

I think I will have to go for a proper drive tommorrow to get the temp up.So my question is what is the average temp people get out of there 300tdis with gauges that tell you temp?

I relise the outside temp, speed, hills and towing can affect the temp but I just want a average on what people think it should be running at.

Thanks Azza

should be around 85 as they really need a working thermostat to run nicely. most mine has ever gotten to is 92 deg pulling about 1.5 tonne trailer up a bloody long hill, pacing the tamborine termite's v8 and some mad mother in a pantec on the way to cooma... :P

the 300tdi thermostats crack at 88c so they will run about 91c normal operating temp, the viscus fan cuts in about 94c.....

the defender system is right on its limit when 100% they should be well maintained, power flush every 12 months and radiator rodded every time you replace a timing belt (70,000km)

i would get the VDO sender to suit your gauge so its acurate.
