Can't get into safe mode

I want to run a viruscleaner in safe mode (XP SP2)F8 I can manage.It can't get past the log in screen - its not recognising either my user name / password, or the administrator's.Any thoughts?Thanks & regardsMax P

I have a copy of "Windows key password reset 7.2" (www.lostpassword.com/windows-xp-2000-nt.htm (http://www.lostpassword.com/windows-xp-2000-nt.htm)) which enables you to reset admin or user passwords from a boot disk.

OR

Sounds like a profile curruption or virus..... In which case I would put in the WinXP disk and perform a re-install/restore of the operating system over the top of itself. Do not use the re-build disks if you have a brand name PC (Dell, HP, Toshiba) as they will usually format everything and perform a clean installation which I would not recommend unless you have a complete backup of all your user files.
