Can the timing belt be changed without the use of sst's? Have to do the sons disco and reading through the posts, seems like I need to use special service tools to hold harmonic and crankshaft. If so does anyone have a diagram for making their own.
TIA,
John.

pretty sure you can do it all with apretty standard tool kit, i know we did on my 200tdi. friend who helped just used drills to stop timing moving

you can do it without the special tools (the drill bits thing is pretty common) but its a lot quicker easier and more confident to do it with the proper tools for the job. From memory the tools dimensions are in the tech supplements but IF your good enough to make one up yourself then you should be able to look at what it does, where it goes and measure it up to suit before you go making it.

Yeah, the drill bits for locating is easy, just worried about getting the harmonic off. From the pics I've seen then the tool looks fairly easy to make once I have dimensions, just lazy in my old ageto go measuring up as I go. Besides the boy's got work Monday and I don't want to waste my weekend stuffing around measuring and making things if I don't have to.

its just a generic harmonic balance puller you'd be after.... make sure you get the right threads for the bolts and then drill a bar into them that you tie onto the chassis to hold it.

When changing the tensioner pulley the old one had a short bolt that went through the slotted washer which was attatched to the back of the roller. The new one has a slotted washer supplied, does this go in the front of the roller and a longer bolt need installing or have I missed something somewhere?

thanks Scouse, the jobs all done. Everything just about fell off, nothing very tight. harmonic slid off. Put it all back together and the gasket at the back of the waterpump started to leak, so had to pull this off again as we had replaced pump. Then took it for a test drive and power dropped @ 3000 revs, this had me worried, went back and found wastegate sticking.
