2.Go to "accounts"
3.click the account Already set up and click on properties
4.click on "general" TAB
5. set it up to whatever your ISP mail server is ie , mineis mail.tpg.com.au

7. Make sure you incoming and outgoing POP3 ( post office protocol ) is set up correctly
example; mine is,
incoming mail
mail.tpg.com.au

mail.tpg.com.au
also retype your email account
username and password.

Already done all of that a couple of times, all matches the dinosaurs settings.Sends fine, cant collect emails from the server???
It is connected to the net, also have issues with it taking much longer than it should to connect to our wireless modem that is on the old dinosaur. The boy's laptop has no issue with the wireless connection.
He tells me Vista is POO,his is XP,Dinosaur is WIN98.

Which email client are you using.
Outlook? Outlook Express?

Andrew if it is receiving OK then it has to be the either:
Outgoing mail settings: username, password, server and protocol, Firewall settings or AV Settings
I suspect it will be the mail settings. I haven't setup e-mail for Vista using the replacement to Outlook Express. Check that you have a secure outgoing connection (i.e. that needs a username and password). If you are using BigPuddle then you should have the outgoing mail set to SMTP and authentication. Check out the Bigpond Help page (https://bigpond.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bigpond.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=12611&p_sid=2yI1Lpaj&p_lva=10264&p_page=1&display=content) as it has some information on a variety of mail applications.

Microsoft Mail,and bigpond.
Thinking about it today,I dont recall doing the password but its filled in,perhaps windows has used the computer logon or another automatically?????
Will double check that later on.

Disable Trend Micro Anti Virus for this exercise , I suspect your Antivirus is interfering with your Incoming mail?
if there are any other programs that checks your incoming or outgoing ports could you disable them as well, for now, have you got any SPAM Filter set up?
EDIT:
I noticed your Email Account is Username@bigpond.net.au
when you set up a new account , did you type username@bigpond.net.au or// username@bigpond.com.au

Got changed to .net.au yonks ago,2005,when I swaped to broadband.
Will see what happens with Trend off.It has spam filters, they arent turning up in the spam folder.

Just to try something different
on your new laptop , instead of using Microsoft Mail client
can you open up Outlook and try setting up an account using the same configuration as before?
Are you using Vista on you New laptop?

How about the Windows Firewall setting in that POO version called Vista you are running. What are it's settings?
Worth a look:)

Stupid question, but the other machine isn't set to download and then delete the mails, is it? With POP3, they only stay on the server if you tell the mail client to leave them there....it isn't usually the default.
Otherwise, go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance, and then tick the "Mail" option under "Troubleshooting" and send me the log file and I'll have a look what's happening. (Search for "pop3.log", as there are a few places it can get put depending on how Vista was installed).
Feel free to ring me tomorrow too, if you like.

Would still think it is worth checking to see if Windows Firewall is on or not.

Ok,some but no progress!!!!
We have a wireless router on the dinosaur.
From Bigpond,if its not a direct connection, the secure settings are needed.
Tried them in a number of combinations, now getting error messages. One on Mail, one from bigpond. It is really annoying me.Havent written the errors down,1 is to do with port numbers.Cant find on bigpond which port nos to use for Mail with secure settings.
Even re-started didnt work.Have been pressing APPLY as req.
YEP GETTING MORE CONFUSED!!!!

Hi Andy
Haven't used MS Mail but I assume it is similiar to Office 2007. In the account settings under outgoing server ensure the box for 'Outgoing server requires authentication' is ticked and then play around with the options below that to see if you can get one to work.
Cheers

Have messed heaps with all that stuff, didnt understand too much to begin with, but seem to have my head around it all.
The wireless router, being un secure seems to be the issue, same goes for getting onto the internet.
Will get a BIG HAMMER from the shed, should fix things:cool::cool::cool::cool:

FIXED :cool::cool::cool::cool:
I called the Big Swamp helpline.
Turned out that our old email account was the issue.
Any of the emails with our old addy on(dialup) should be automatically forwarded to our newer broadband addy.Turns out its set up back to front, new gets sent to old.Added the old account and all is fixed.
Had 2 puter gurus and the nerd go thru it,they couldnt pic the issue.
