View Full Version : Dug out one of our S1s

I've got one of our S1s (49 model with narrow springs) back in action. Sadly it has a 173 GMH in it now so has lost originality and I can't track down the original Motor:(. I do have a 2ltr here though. I look at some of your S1s and makes me want to restore this one. My grandfather got it new so has all our history and lots of pics and storys with it and I am still on the original property she started her life on and worked hard as were no dozer tracks in those days. They even put snow chains on it and tied fence post on it for balast on side slopes:eek: Its body is now in poor condition and chassis has had front X member moved for GMH. Also the lamp style Head lights are gone:( The other S1 here is a 51 and is in much better shape. It has been here since new aswell. I like the 49 as they have more charater and are rare.
Here is hopeing some how we can get her back to former glory. Tony

Pretty???? Is that a word that you can use when describing a Land Rover?

May have had a hard working life, but that is their charm - have been working for 60 (59) years and now time for retirement. So what that they have had a heart transplant.

What has been made by man can be re-made by man!

Diana :) :) :)

Diana :) :) :) Opps maybe i meant not as tidy:D. Sure has had a long working life . the GMH went in in 1982 and continued use here fencing and spraying till 2006. Only reason it has been stood down is a broken brake pipe and jumping out of 2nd gear. I put a swivel kit and seals in it not long before. The CVs are very different to the later series as some of you know.
I'm not sure what to do with it yet. Fix it as is or full restoration. Would be a big job but likely possible. I'm not real keen on the GMH Engine being in it.:( Far to snarly compared to a 1.6 of 2ltr. Any one good with aluminium;)Tony

OH Yea :D I forgot how much fun these things are. On the way to the work shop to do brakes and sevice:( My Rangie was meant to go in next:angel: Notice the dip sw is missing off the steerig wheel. Now has a late s1 steering wheel. Not the same. I need Parts that may be hard to find.

I have a short movie on phone cam as well but I have never tried to upload movies with my sat internet as chews band with:o. Have a few more pics and some history. Also have a Old Movie clips back in mid 50s + Old photoes that I need to scan.
Briefly It was the 2nd LR here as My great grandfather got a 48 model (Ring pull 4x4) They traded it up on the 49 model in November 1949 as the 48 was prone to water in the gear box as in those days there was no roads or bridges here so did a lot of wadeing. Seems to be a lot said about the fuel pump:eek: On one ocasion they took the bonet off and some one had to sit on the guard and Tap the pump to get home:eek: Plenty more yarns with this old thing I can asure you;) Tony

Had to do some pruneing to get the Ford out
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=10009&stc=1&d=1218102812

It had sunk a bit over the years. It fired up but just smoked the tyres. Had to get the 2 Door out to shift it.

Even it almost dug its self in:eek:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=10011&stc=1&d=1218103052

Hate to say it but even though the S1 fired up it had sunk as well. I wasn't going to risk driving it out so pulled it free 1st. Then drove it out:D.

We are having some discussion here now on this things future. Obviously it is not viable to to a full restoration:(. So do we keep it as is. Just tidy it up paint, mech etc. OR  Put Range Rover under pinings in it and keep the body as S1 :o You know I like the Rangies:angel: I think it would be a crime though.:wasntme: For now we will get it sorted as is. We have here a Dodge Master cylinder and a VH 44 inline boaster. Master cylinder has dried out and a bit seized so will see how bad it is before rekit. I suspect slave cylinders will be the same. Also needs a new front flexible hose and rear steel pipe. Have not looked any further yet:eek:;) Tony

Obviously it is not viable to to a full restoration:(.

After seeing the piles of rusting scrap some people have restored into gleaming showroom condition vehicles this weekend at the Eastern Creek Classic I wouldn't be too swift to come to that conclusion... ;)

So true. With enough $$$$$$$ Any thing is possible. I just cant come to terms with junking it:( As being a one owner 49 with full history. It will be a big one if a full restoration.. I also have a 50 model here (One owner) in a lot better shape and all original but they not as rare so not keen on it compared to the 49 for full restoration. Tony

There are not a whole lot of differences between the 1949 and the 1950's up till the last few thousand, so you could easily do your resto on your 1949 using the best body bits from both then re assemble the 1950 with the remaining bits.

Whatever the result they will be 1949 and 1950 with known histories.

Tony,
You are right they do cost a lot of money to restore, but your "49 looks to be in fantastic condition! Even the springs look reclaimable! I wish mine had had a rear crossmember and tow bar that looked like that :D

I agree that making it into a coiler would be a crime,

Cheers Charlie

The only numbers I can find so far on a plate on the engine side of bulkhead.
Car No 06108399. Does this tell us anything?
Thanks Tony

Without my book near me, I think that means a 1950 date, because the first zero refers to the zero in 1950.

If you clean the muck and grime off the left hand engine mount you should be able to read the chassis number there as well,

Cheers Charlie
