Hey All
My D2 has for a while now had a groan from the steering mainly when reversing and having to go from full lock to full lock. Lately it has gotten louder.
Now I trying to work out what it is...thinking steering pump, maybe tie rod ends, or even worn bushes?
I dont get the noise on standard steering, only on full lock.
Any ideas?

if anything like the d1 setup then usually it is the pump cavitating or the power steering unit.
check the pump without belt and make sure it doesnt have end play ie the pulley moves in and out by more that a millimetre or two.
you can bleed the old oil out of the system and fill the system with new by opening the bleed screw on the top of the power steering unit while someone slowly moves the steering wheel from side to side... make sure you keep the fill bottle full.... you need engine running of course..
fixed it in my d1...
make sure you use the right oil...

Id expect that the fluid is full of air (milky and full of small bubbles.
This can be caused by a number of things, low fluid level, small hole in a line (accompanied by a slow leak normally), Loose fitting/s or crimps.
a. flush the fluid as Inc said
b. repair leak
Beggered bearings normally are accompanied by a grinding noise all the time, the noise you describe sounds like cavitation caused by air in the system.

The D2 has a problem with the reinforcement inside the chassis rail near/at the steering box mounts. The rail flexes slightly on full lock & creates a groan/creak against the reinforcement. There's a bulletin issued for a fix.
It involves drilling a hole or two in the rail & plug welding to secure the reinforcement section to the rail.
It's quite a common complaint so it might be the cause of your problem.

SCOTT!!
You have just solved a frustrating mystery for me!
I have a D2 with the same complaint, and I swear it is INSIDE the chassis at the steering box! I even tightened the steering box bolts, which were loose, and it made it worse!
Thanks mate, can you possibly supply me with the bulletin number? or a pic/ instructions on where to drill etc?
(This vehicle was dealer serviced etc all its life until my customer just bought it, and the noise has been there for a llooongg time according to previous owner:mad::mad:)
I just Luurve fixing this stuff!!:) Give me a MIG welder and a die grinder and I'm a happy little vegemite!
Thanks muchly!!:):):):)

Gotta say the right thing here ;).
Any LR dealer will happily do the job for you.
Or else send me your email via PM & I'll send you a copy of the repair info (only if you're not near a dealer of course).

Thanks Scott,
It was a 45 minute job, (No ACE on this Vehicle:)) It WAS very loose, and it fixed it immediately!
Instructions etc were spot on, and it was a good result.
(Welding and cuttting into LR chassis is my favourite pastime!)
So thankyou again for the info, and got the other stuff this morning too;)

G'day Angus,
This guy is a good customer, and I kept him waiting for 30 minutes while I dealt with a myriad of phone calls and customers rolling in. I charged him for 45minutes, we are at $92/hr, so $69.
Usually there is a $30 consumables charge for any welding/ cutting, drilling, grinding, painting etc, but in this instance I didn't add it.
:D:D
He's happy, and I'm happy its fixed!!

Hi all,
My steering is really bad at the moment so I am planning to flush, refill and bleed today.
Problem is I can't find any specs. on the volume of fluid I need to have on hand and I have a problem choosing the correct fluid.
RAVE etc. says Dexron II D.
The auto shops have Dexron III and claim it will do.
So, could someone let me know if this is the case and how much fluid it takes to complete the job?
Thanks

Does this tend to come when the driver turns to the right? I have a real strange noise only when turning the steering wheel to the right.
Cheers bronson

would that be why I can get an extra 1/4 turn at full lock at low speeds (idle in 1st)?
