Spotted at Austimer Beach

Driving through Austimer yesterday morning and spotted this - is it yours - no one around - guess you were in the pub - note the front free wheeling hubs.

Did you perhaps check to see if everything else was standard production spec? e.g. Salisbury diffs. V8 etc

If it has free wheeling hubs, it most likely has a non standard drive train.
Where would find free wheeling hubs to suit a 101 and why would you fit them to a constant 4WD vehicle.
May be they were fitted as a step to get in and out of the cab easier

May be the free wheeling hubs are a clever way around the 101s front tail shaft rattle.
Lock up the centre diff and dis enguage the free wheeling hubs and no more front tail shaft rattle with some very slightly better fuel economy.....brillant.
Who sells free wheel hubs for a 101. or what fits.
We have to track down the owner.

I know that there is a 2WD kit for the LT230 transfer box made by Santana (which offered their Land Rovers as selectable 2WD) but I am unaware if they made one for the LT95 transmission.

Was back in Wollongong today for a funeral - standing outside the funeral parlour at Bulli it drove past - the celebrant didn't seem as excited as I was.

A little later I passed it again in Austimer and my uncle said he also saw it at Austimer today so it must live in the far northern suburbs of Wollongong.

Sorry didn't get any other info other than the pics - I saw the sump but nothing else - I didn't have the hide to climb through the truck when the owner was not around. Clearly is being well used:) as a everyday driver - spotted four times in two days.

At the wings over Illawarra air show I meet the owner of the 101 pictured above in this thread,
My 101 was there and we started talking.
The diffs are standard and the free wheeling hubs were imported from the UK to suit the 101.
It is fitted with a P76 motor and range rover transmission.
It has two lpg tanks in the back allowing 200 lts cap.
The free wheel hubs solve the tailshaft vibs .
The Bloke lives at Austinmeer.
He also owns a lightweight and just sold a 5 door Perentie ex army....only a few made ?....must be a Landrover nut.;);):p

That vehicle looks and its description sounds very much like one that once belonged to Jeff Hampton, a gentleman I knew 20 odd years ago. He passed away some years back but whilst he owned it he had me fit lockright diffs front and rear, and the free wheel hubs were one of two pairs his son Russell Hampton of Melbourne who also owns a 101 had specially made by Warn in the USA. The hubs are actually modified Dodge Power Wagon FWH. The Front Lockright was problematic and was removed and a Pneumatic difflock of my own design installed.If it is the same truck there should be an airline fitting protruding from the l/h/side spreader tool hole on the front diff.

Surely the front shaft still turns irrespective of fitting fwh due to the cdl having to be locked - so the vibrations should still be there if the standard driveshaft is being used.

At the time we were talking I had a whole lot of other things going on and didnt get his name.
After showing him my 101 with its lockers, I got the impression his vehicle didnt have overdrive or lockers.
The rangerover transmission fitted ( dont know what type) was to gear it up.
He said....the free wheeling hubs came from England.???????
The next time I go north I will try and track him down as his 101 is normally parked on the main drag near the beach.

It would be unusual but not impossible for two 101s to have identical hardtop, a 4.4 engine, gas tanks and be fitted with FWHs. But regardless, you were keen to find out a source of free wheel hubs, I've informed you that Warn have done them previously, and may be prepared to do them again. My job is done.:)
