A friend has a TDV6 SE - he just bought the Landrover spot light kit which he has fitted. The lights do not work and the car is in getting the spotlight section of the ECU switched on so the lights will work.

Is this true? - is the the D3 so dependent on computers that you cannot even use the spotlights without the computer saying yes? I can accept computers running the engine but the lights is a bit over the top.

Just wait for it drive by wire , your brakes and steering are all going down that road in the future:cool:

It could well be true. The LP (P38a) RR was the same if fitting fog lights to the SE spec cars.

I think it'll be true but not for the reason you think. When I first got my D3 I had an argument with them re the diff in trip computer options on mine vs the demo car I'd driven. I lost the argument and it came down to what was programmed.

I think they're doing the same thing that a lot of tech companies do; where all the features are built into even the most basic models but are selectively activated by the manufacturer depending on the model or option taken up. This can be done via software keys or hardware keys (eproms).

Why? Locks you into LR and stops the likes of ARB, TJM offering any smart options.

Yes, its true; same with things like ipod connections etc - anything you buy off Ebay and wack in you might need to visit LR dealer shortly after!

If you want the dash warning about fog light bulb failures it needs to be turned "on" in the computer.
Obviously if it is turned on before they are fitted then the message would be on permanent display.

If you them as per LR instructions they need to be enabled by dealer. If regularly serviced by dealer they may do it for free at next service otherwise they will charge you. No reason why you cannot wire them the old way with a relay off the high beam halogen ciruit though.:)

Thanks for the info - cost my mate $120 to get his lights to work in addition to the $1000 for the lights in the first place.

As I said before - I think landrover have lost the plot with its computer driving everything - engine and gearbox for sure - lights - comeon - absolute nonsense.

At price you could get some decent lightforces fitted.:o The LR ones are crap.

Not saying you're wrong:), but everything is going computer-controlled these days and cars are just one more example. It's not going to stop so accept it or move to Cuba and drive a '56 Chevy ;)

I had am look on landrovertechinfo.com - the GTR site which has all the installation information for the accessories on it and cannot see where any configuration of the computer is necessary to enable the lights. You need to register to access the site but it is free to view the accessory manuals and handbooks.
Also available thouugh www.ownerinfo.landrover.com with no login

I assume you mean driving/spot lights and not the fog lights. I fitted a set of Lightforce XGTs myself, using the LR switch kit (which you have to cut the dash to fit). I made an earlier post on which wires to connect the relay to so that they are legal, eg only operate on high beam. Did not have any problems with having to enable anything with the computer.

Hi all,
If u are fitting the factory wiring loom, you WILL need to enable the Driving/Aux lights function.;)

If u are wiring your own loom then obviously you dont need to enable anything.

Tote from memory the instructions on GTR dont mention anymore to enable anything with IDS. Its just a given. Even with the factory instructions in the box u just get a little picture of the IDS computer on the back page if u are lucky!:(

have to agree, we had ours fitted by LR and the price was something like $600 and was done prior to deliver. I am very disspointed in them as the light output is quite dim compared other others. They are noticeably yellow. I think the looms are not up to the correct guage and feel it should be coming off the battery via a relay as we allo used to do. Not sure where they feed directly off but appears to be a substantial voltage drop accros it.

It cost me $300 for Barbagello's to wire up my old lightforce 240's with the factory loom including the nice switch kit that "Brick " posted up. Pretty happy as they did a great job and i didnt have to muck around wiring it in myself.

Hey Peter,

I have the Landrover Spotties and yes they are not great for the money.
The way to go is put some Narva Blue Halogen Bulbs in and that does help a fair bit. They seem to light better with same power output.

Dave,
thanks for that mate, was thinking along those lines but also would like to put i in a new harness from the spots to a better realy that feeds directly off the battery.

Think the wire guage and the original harness not being direct from the battery is half the trouble.

what wattage globes did you fit?

cheers

Hi Pete,

Narva Arctic Blue, H7 12v-55w (ADR Approved)>> Part: 48607BL2.
The Arctics give you double distance, Eg: 1600 normal & 4000 with these.
No increase on power or heat & also suitable for polycarbonate headlamps.
Its a cheaper option & the blue /white effect offers a very clear direct light :BigThumb:

Digging up this old post on fitting driving lights to a D3.
What are the benefits of fitting/using the factory loom and switch?
Obviously there is a benefit to landrover in the form of $$$ from my pocket to theirs but what are they giving me in return?

None, Yes and nothing apart from a nice factory switch.

I just have my driving lights wired up so the relay is activated from the +ve side of the high beam. Some states require an additional switch but I've never had to fit one yet.

Hi Trobbo, I'm with you, but it does sound like too much trouble. What are they asking for to get the LR loom and switch, and is it beyond us mortals to wire it up without frying anything ?

I'm not looking to use the LR lights though. They remind me of the old Lucas fogs with the yellow lenses. ( although I should have collected a few looking at what they are going for on the net )
