View Full Version : Airbag Removal - Continuation

Since I didn't get a chance to reply to the earlier thread so here is my $0.02
I have a 96 Disco which HAD airbags but they have since been removed.
It's an easy job, only took about 1.5hrs - although apparently there is another component under the dash that I haven't removed yet as I couldn't get to it (It can wait till the heater core needs replacing)
The 96 variant had airbags as an OPTION, and by VicRoads Standards I was allowed to remove them (I came across legal documentation proving this)
And yes - I still value my and my passengers lives.
One thing about the D1 airbags is that they are crap - the sensors are high and so far back that they do not trigger when you would expect them to.
I have walked around workshops & wrecking yards looking at totaled D1s from front impact that never had the airbags deployed (some of these where known fatal crashes)
The metal frame is exposed as said by others earlier - I overcame this by fitting a $30 dash mat which then covers this area and keeps the dash looking neat.
Ring your road Authority or Engineer for your final answer - but I would certainly not hold my breath waiting to be saved by D1 airbags.
Cheers
Dave.

thanks for the info, Dave
I asked this question before but it didn't get a full answer...maybe I didn't make it plain enough but you would have had to have been aware of this to safely remove the airbags
?? if the relevant fuse is removed... and the time allowed for the capacitors to "power-down"......are the airbags then disabled ??
thanks in advance - Laurie

Thanks Dave, my understanding from talking to some LR wreckers is that the D1 airbags rarely deploy, but it would be great if I could get a copy of the documentation that you have that says they can be removed legally.
Are you able to send a copy of this to me as I am concerned by the implications of my D1 having airbags and a body lift and in hindsight would prefer to have a vehice without them.

The problem with all of this airbags are the be all and end all of the safe existance of life is that :
a. how many people with serious head and neck injuries are from vehicals that had airbags that didnt deploy?
b. how many facial injuries and neck injuries are caused by airbags?
c. nobody asked if it was to be driven on the road or if it was a paddock bomb or comp rig with 5 point harness and roll cage, they just assumed that he was a young idiot who wanted to kill his passanger.
Ive said it before and I will say it again, Airbags are a secondary restraint system that rarely works how it is intended to due to you cant perfectly replicate the situations that they are tested in.
They do have their place and in a small percentage of incidence where they do work and they do perform how they are meant to you will never know if they really saved the person/s involved or not as you will never fully replicate the exact situation again......hopefully....
This whole debate is a mute point.
It is much like having a conversation with a Prius owner, even knowing they are wrong there are still some that will argue the point.
Airbags are a bandaid fix for bad drivers in my opinion but thats all it is, an opinion.

worse, they give bad drivers a sense of invulnerability.
solution: remove drivers side airbag and fit a 12" spike to the steering wheel boss.
For those drivers unmoved by the threat of impalement, ban comprehensive car insurance :D

The method of removal was disconnect battery completely, remove fuses and be very very careful.
It worked for me, but don't take my word as gospel :D
Tony, when I'm back in Melbourne I'll dig a copy of it up.
Cheers
Dave.

I think you have started somthing you probably would not have thought to have gone this far.
I have a D1 disco with a passenger air bag....we do many serious 4wding trip...weekends away and all over Aus. I have never had a problem with not having a jesus handle on the dash...I do have a handle above the door which I do use. I hope this is helpful:)

He didn't start anything.
This site has far too many opinions - often unwanted.
If you can answer a persons technical question objectively with ACTUAL knowledge (not just from the net) then you should, otherwise keep your opinion to your self unless the user has sought ADVICE on the matter.
My comment is not directed at anyone, just a thought that I've been carrying for a while :)

and here I thought the WWW was being used for good,,,
apparently unsolicited opinions are not wanted in the Discovery Forum.
so, no more smilies, no backchat, no off the cuff funnies,
and ONLY speak if the THREAD starter requests your presence in the post.
*cue booming voiceover guy---
BLKNIGHT! BLKNIGHT to post 27 please!*
I dont even want to THINK about the regs Dave would use in the tech forum.
Back in the dark old days of the Tech Forum unless you had 20 years of LR spannering or Engineer after your name you were asked politely to go elsewhere.
and people did.

I'm sorry you took my answer that way (I only quoted the 1st para of your reply merely trying to point out that he didn't "start" anything) - my reply wasn't intended to be at you.
I apologise you took it that way
Cheers.
