ITs started.... Fozzy past rego so now Im getting him ready for the cape trip, Ive got a lot ahaed of me but small regular steps should see me where I need to be with it....
Today saw,
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/708.jpg
the thermostat housing gaskets sorted so the cooling system is now all A1 and its just waiting through some settling time before I get to it with the coolant flush and new coolant.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/709.jpg
an oil presure gauge, coolant temp gauge and volt meter installed in a temporary position as I will be reworking the dash to sort out the warren in there and replace the speedo cable.
this weekend will see the installation of a second spare setup in the rear tray, removal of the frame work and setting up the bonnet mounted spare.
next week will see the first service to replace the running in oil (the engines only got 12 hours on the clock since its rebuild) and a new exhuast system that marks the begining of the prep work for the WVO fuel system. at that stage I'll square up an inspection service for bearings brakes and a few other bits..
after that should see the WVO fuel system installed, multiple batteries (Im thinking 3 with solar panels on 2 on a new frame at the rear) water tanks, air tanks + compressor (hopefully engine driven), Rebuild a IIA box to place in with a PTO for the winches

Looking good, same bullbar as my old one. What is going to be the solution re the noise/revs/cruise speed issues of the old diesel when compared with the other vehicles going on the big trip.

earplugs.......
I'll be sitting on 80kph max and aiming to average about 75, which conveniently is also the most fuel effecient speed for dad in lara with the setup hes likely to be taking...
as I'll be in a quick setup vehicle for camping and will be cooking on the donk I can squeeze about an extra hour into the day if needed so I can leave as the first vehicle of the first packet and then as the rest of the convoy leap frogs me I'll roll in as TEC of the last packet.... done that before..
going by some of the ground we'll be covering other than the long runs to and fro I dont think its going to be a major issue...

Good thinking, i found 80 to be a happy speed for the diesel and it would push to 90. Even had it at 100 on a few downhill slopes :p sure as hell knew about it though. Damn they make some noise. Cant kill em though. My money is on Fozzy not to have a single mechanical issue during the trip.

With everyone on big loads and campers I only planned on sitting on around 80-90 anyway. When we can.
It's tempting me to take the stage 1

thanks but since Im going to be running or attempting to run WVO I expect to be at least doing in an electric pump, fuel filter, maybe an injector at $136 I'll have 4 spare on board) and possabley the injector pump...
I'll possabley have a spare injector pump flown ahead.

didnt quite get as much done this weekend as I wanted but in order to fit the second spares retaining well I had to remove this
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/610.jpg
the recuperation tank for the emession control system for the left hand side tank (if you need one PM me for it, I'll also be pulling the RHS one)
so after snapping bolts drilling cutting, filing, more drilling riveting and screwing I wound up with this
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/611.jpg
I thought I had, but didnt, a spare wheel setup for the bonnet so I need to scrounge up that and with a little luck I'll have that fitted along with the new exhaust this week and I'll get the frame off of the back...

Oh and Mrs JohnR said "If you push harder on the pedal on the right you might catch up to us" :D We cruised nicely on the way home today at 120kph fully loaded with the camper in tow

today saw the first half of the bonnet mounted spare wheel carrier fitted, If I wanted to I can now mount the spare. What I havent added is the rubber bumpers that keep the spare off of the bonnet... Just got to get some new rubbers for it and then fit that up....
If anyones got a lead on new rubber mounts that will do the trick, lay em on me...
Due to the setup of my spare wheel storage I am now limited to 7.50 R16 profile tyres
Of the rims that I bring 2 will be heavy duty rims and one will probabley be a split rim (unless I manage to get my hands on more split rims) so my rubber can double up to help out people on stock deefer rubber if needed...
I got the speed run in on saturday while on the way over to 68GS's place to start out on a rewire of his workshop... top speed sustained for more than 10 seconds , on the flat according to the GPS track log is.....
100 Kph...
most frequent cruising speed was 74 KPH (thats got a +/-1kph tolerance

Should be able to get the rubber buffers from just about any landy shop. Try FWD at Taringa. I need to track down four as well. Something else to get around to.

Just for interest, whenever I plan a trip, I work on a speed average on the balcktop of 70kph. Our normal cruising speed is only around 85 to 95, and when you factor in smoko and lunch stops (mandatory I say) the days average always ends up being around 70.

I dont do it that way...
I factor it out as sections of driving then plan the stops in.. each leg wil always be between 2 and 2.5 hours of driving at my nominated "cruise speed" then I have a 30 minute stop the lunch stop is always an hour.
I may not use all the time but when youve got to write up the log book, check the load, check the rubber, the vehicle yada yada, take a leak, wash your hands, quick nibble and a drink it soon adds up to the break times...
and onto todays update....
The Fuel consumption check....
near enough to 220Km traveld (219.8 by the trip meter) for 23.01 l of diesel...
the speedo reads a touch slow when compared to the GPS which means one of 2 things.
a, the speedo is lazy and is showing the wrong speed but keeping the correct KM on the odo and trip meters
b, the speedo is right but the gearing is wrong so I am going further than its indicating.. I'll have to investigate further....
but the maths of it all as it is is that Im getting about 9.5K to the liter or 10.5l/100K.
and given that I have a very slight weep from the return line a couple of injectors that I know are not spraying correctly, the exhaust is stupidly restrictive and I still dont have a decent air intake setup I think I can crack it for the low 9's to the hundred for consumption when its all just right....

bye bye free wheeling hubs, hello full time drive.... (well full time as in I dont have to get my feet muddy to get the front wheels driven any more)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/432.jpg
wheel bearings adjusted and put back to oil (which they sort of were) and added some one shot grease for good measure while it sorts itself out, serviced the diffs and checked the lash and pulled the shafts out of dobbos ex sals so Ive got sparies now all I need to do is track down a set of fine spline series front shafts (all mine are II's and IIA 10 spliners) and Im covered for diffs and axles.
Brakes are a little thin but since i gearbox brake a lot Thats not a big problem atm but a measure up against some spare shoes I have should see the brakes sorted next week..
speaking of engine braking...
The new Exhaust sounds great (for a 2.25 diesel)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/07/534.jpg
the pick ups a lot better from mid range up now the old pipe was crushed in 2 places and had a cross section of maybe 25mm.
I also got the electrics a little more functional with the temp and fuel gauge in the dash now working and the indicator stalk replaced so that now at least it doesnt automatically indicate right at random intervals...

Darren came over for a look at kermit today so as part of the parcel I got him to help out doing the coolant system flush and change...
so he got his first drive in and of a diesel sIII
at this point Im now at the stage where the basic reliability issues of the vehicle have been addressed and the search for the right cheap rubber and the installation of the WVO system can commence....
(now Ive said that Im taking bets on the first component/subsystem to chuck a wobbly at me)
after the WVO conversion will come the gearbox rebuild then the installation of the winch and then water storage and somewhere along the lines a kick ass aircompressor.

The alternator... the charge warning light had been getting brighter and brighter and the alternator spat on sunday with the light coming hard on and the volts gauge leveling at just under 12... yep no output on that one...
so alternator swapped on sunday arvo for a known good one...
and some preliminary thought works done on the WVO system
heres the schematics and layout...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/203.jpg
yes Im aware that Ive inadvertantly put the schematic diagram of a hydraulic motor in for the engine pump and the diesel pump...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/08/204.jpg
The layout of the hosing isnt quite right but for somthing I knocked up between turns on the mound at the range I dont think I did too bad...
and lo, over a lunch break I laboured to produce....

A fuel heater tank pressure tested to whatever the hell the airlines at work are putting out (and it only has to deal with about 14psi max) it leaks at the fittings but they arent sealed in yet... All I have to do now is wrap it in copper pipe.

hey with un assisted drum brakes all the way round riding on leaf springs driving on the potholes, divets and mounds thats passes as the base ring road trust me 80kph is plenty fast enough..
I wouldnt want to tow something to darwin with it but its nice to know that it can without cooking up, the temp gauges didnt move past their normal spots once moving but naturally rose up every time I shut it down to unload or load.
by my calcs I was about 500Kg short of the maximum load I could possabley take so Ive no worries about doing the cape trip with the load out I want to take...

hey were are you getting injectors for $136 each?
All I can find is UK injectors and the postage is killing me!
Fozzy is looking fantastic; I read this thread with great interest...
