I am wondering if anyone knows if a gearbox out of a 2.25 will fit into a original six cylinder landy. Both landys are series 2a any info is appreciated

Thanks Cookie :)

yes but only if both boxes come from a 6 pot....

the bell housing is drilled differently for a 6 and 4 pot engine but providing they are both the same vintage of box the bell housing is interchangeable with some work.

the 4 pot has a single bolt at the 12 oclock position and the 6 pot has a pair of them either side of the 12 oclock position...

The gearsets and shafts will work whatever engine is in front of it. However the bellhousing at the front of the box is a different animal.

Starter motor is in slightly different place and different numbers and positions of studs to join the flywheel housing to the bell housing.

All is not lost however the bellhousings are interchangeable (with a few restrictions): Series 1 bellhousings up to 1955 require a early starter and flywheel.
Series 1 bellhousings 1955 petrol onwards will fit 6 cyl but only fit up to suffix A layshaft front bearings.
Series 2 - 2 litre petrol gearboxes are the same as late s1 and will fit 6 cyl.
Series 2 - 2 1/4 litre petrol up to Suffix A 2a can be swapped with S1 - 2 litre petrol bellhousing and fit 6 cyl.
Series 2a - 2 1/4 Suffix B onwards can be swapped with series 2a 6 cyl bellhousings
Series 3 - 2 1/4 bellhousings can be swapped for series 3 - 6 cyl bellhousing but clutch hydraulic system is different to S2a.
Series 3 - 2 1/4 bellhousings can be swapped for series 2a - 6 cyl bellhousing but S2A clutch throwout system must also be swapped.

The strongest gearboxes are the Suffix D and later S2a box or the S3 box with the lattice pattern in the gearbox casing over the reverse idler gear. Ideally, these are the 2 types of gearbox that you should use on the 6 cyl.

Hope this helps.
