g'day all

I'm just wondering if landrover ever put a tacho on pre td5 defenders becouse mine hasn't go one. has any one put one in? how hard is it?

it would be handy just to know how manny rev's it's doing.

Cheers tristan

Lots of people in the UK were doing it and there were lots of ads on ebay for after market Smith's 50mm tacho's suitable for Defender a couple of years ago.

It can be run off the alternator just like those on the TD5 and the first of the Phase II Range Rover classic V8s

dont worrie about hooking it up to the alt on a TD5, the pin/wiring is already sitting at the back of the ecu to use.
think its pin 19.
google it.
there should be somethin on here, maybe in the projects/tut's section.

Pre TD5 they are driven from the alternator.

A pre TD5 rev counter does not work on a TD5. TD5 rev counters have some signal amplification electronics in the back of them and take the feed from pin 19 on the ecu. Some Defenders have the wire upto the dash also - think its grey from memory.

Here in the UK you can normally pick a TD5 one up for £90 - £100.

if your colour blind its grey:D or a lighter shade of.
over here they are yellow on the earlies and the later ones are yellow with a pink stripe.

It's Sunday arvo and I can't quite follow the thread but my Defender was a 300Tdi. I had someone purchase a VDO tacho and calibrate it for the engine and then send it to me and I fiited it myself.

Took out the clock and swapped the fuel gauge across so that it was directly in front of me when I glanced at the dash.

Hi Tristan
When you get a price for the tacho kit, then get a price for a Nanocom from Rovacraft(PM Stuart). The gauge is possibly up to half the cost of Nanocom!!!!
The nanocom shows RPM,turbo boost, coolant temp and battery voltage when used in instrument mode!!!!
PLUS it gives you accsess to all the TD5 diagnostics, abs etc etc etc.No messing around installing gauges simply plug into the diagnostic port.
There are a heap of us who got them, best money you can spend if you own a TD5!!!!

I fitted a VDO one to my '95 300TDI Defender last year

Check these part numbers (may be out of date now)

Part No. Range Size Voltage
333 015 037 0 - 4000rpm 52mm 12V
333 015 031 0 - 8000rpm 52mm 12V

I went for the 4000 rpm model as I figured we would not use much of the 8K range model.

My alt already had the W terminal on the back. If not, I believe previous links show that it is easy to retrofit.

Took the clock out of the dash and slipped the tacho in it's place.
