We are new to the forum and would like some information please.
We are currently looking at purchasing a Land Rover Discovery 2001 LT seriesII 4L V8 118650 kms asking price $13250, would this be a fair price for this vehicle. Also is there any problems or faults with this particular model etc. We do plan on using it to go camping to places like Fraser Island but it will also be used for daily running around. Any information good or bad would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

grantmaree,
Its hard to assess value without knowing what options are fitted but assuming its a base model auto (not the ES model) I'd say its about right, not a bargain, just fair. The biggest issue is whether it has a service history, dont touch it if it doesnt.
Get the details and check out current values in Red Book, here's the link to what I looked up. http://www.redbook.com.au/used-cars/details.aspx?__Nne=15&__sid=11BCCE7B2A0C&acv=GJfw9Mnnlqw.&R=77680&__N=0%204294953958%204294967202%204294965791&__Ns=p_Make_String%7c0%7c%7cp_ClassificationType_S tring%7c0%7c%7cp_Family_String%7c0%7c%7cp_Year_Str ing%7c1%7c%7cp_SequenceNum_Int32%7c0&Cr=1
Good luck, hope it works out
Oh and get ready for about 15l/100km at the very best or 30L/100km if you do short school runs of 500m all up hill (really must speak to my wife again on this) :(

Hi Folks,
I looked at getting a V8 as there were a lot more of them around, drove a few and decided to stick with the original plan to get a Tdi. I have been very happy with it. It has a lot more K's on the clock and is a little older but, I do about 200's a day in it and get about 800k's per tank.
I have driven it on the beach and it goes really well. You might want to test drive a diesel or two before you commit. Just a suggestion based on how pleased I am with mine. I have a 200 Tdi.
There are loads of good rovers around so don't feel pressured to commit. You might want to check out the marketplace here too. I hunted for a while.
Good luck :)

I'd suggest a late model D1 300tdi auto - should pick up one for under $10K or a D2 td5 at about $15+K. If running around in city you'll rue the cost of fuel refills. (I picked up a 2000 auto D2 V8 for $12K and this was probably too much.... I'll be gassing mine when $ and tanks are available).
(300tdi and td5 - $17-18 approx/100km, V8 - $30approx /100km, lpg $16/100km..... so savings in fuel of diesel or lpged disco over 20,000km pa about $2600 pa in fuel. So spend the extra to buy a good td5. In 2 years will have saved difference between a $12k V8 and a $17k D2 td5.)

AFAIK there are no inherent problems with the D2.
Some cars have wheel sensor isssues, check the log book.
There are well known documented problems with the diesel engine. The log book should say these have been rectified.
The V8's will drink more but BOTH engines have a SERIOUS aversion to overheating.
The 2001 may or may not have the capacity to enable the Centre Diff Lock, something else to check. If you find you enjoy offroading in it, enabling the CDL will become an important first step.
I have talked to lots of D2 owners that have traveled over Fraser with only Traction Control.
There is an amazing amount of knowledge to be found here,,
