View Full Version : Leaking Defender TD5 Tank

I had a Excel 40 ltr rear fender fuel tank fitted about two weeks ago. What a complete nightmare!!!

Firstly the main tank was taken out and the fuel pump removed, so that a
drain hole could be drilled. (first mistake according to everyone I have
spoken to that fits these tanks - it is not necessary to remove the main
tank) After everything was fitted back, I then filled both tanks up to
check for leaks. All seemed fine.
After two days the main tank started leaking from the seal around the
access hole where the pump fits in.

I then took the Defender to another workshop to fix the leak. It leaked
again. I then took it back again and its been fine for two days now it
leaking again, especially when parked on a steep slope.

Has anyone else had this problem after fitting a 40 ltr fender tank?
Can the standard seal in the main tank handle the extra pressure caused
from the fender tank?

I am open to any suggestions on how to sort this out.

Thankyou.

it should be able to....

are you sure its leaking from the tank seal and not a fitting?

if you fill out your profile so we know where you are or mention your location in your posts someone might be able to help out.....

All up Id guess that its a fitting weeping and filling up the well that the cover sits in and then thats overflowing....

If you're near brissy I have a spare deefer tank that I can afford to swap out with yours as I can plug the holes and while we're at that we can measure up andcut the acess hole in your floor... (I need to remake my template so I can do it without dropping the tank)

I have edited my profile. (Sorry I had to figure out how to) :D

Thankyou for the offer but unfortunately I am in South Africa.

I dont think its the connectors as it only leaks when parked on a slope or if the tank is full.

I think I still have the plans for the template I used to use for cutting the floor of deefers, I'll chuck an eyeball through some stuff and post it back.

(i'll try to edit it onto this post IF I find it in time....

then you can get an eye onto whats actually going on.

Thought I should report back.

I think the leak has been repaired. turned out to be the white threaded fitting that clips into the top of the tank where the "lid" gets screwed on. Apparently it wasnt cliped in properly. (Hope that makes sence)

Thankyou for all the advise and replies.
