D2 upgrading from Eurovox to Alpine deck

Has anyone upgraded their audio from the standard Eurovox system to the ES's Alpine system?

Is it a plug and play set up?

I have an opportunity to buy an Alpine head unit and underseat 6-CD stacker but no point if its going to be a wiring nightmare.

through out my old standard one and now running a alpine head unit (no stacker) the wiring was alright. but it is hard to find aftermarket speaker to fit into the factory door trim.

I'm just hoping to put a factory head unit and stacker from the top of the line ES into a lower spec car that has no stacker and a different head unit. I hope the wiring is all in situ, but I guess it won't be a big deal if not.

It depends if u have a 7 seater or not & what model year u have.
It also depends if u have the wiring harness for a higher trim level.
In the UK they have 7 trims levels from memory & we only get 2.
I at a guess would say no. But u may be lucky, The 5th door may have the wiring for the subwoofer, remove door trim & have a look, the wiring for the amp may be under the seat (driver's) the wiring for the head deck are all the same. U may have the wiring for the s/wheel switches.
If u have the higher level loom, the plug for the changer could also be there. Its a lot of ifs...;)

It would be easier & cheaper to by an Alpine unit from JB or something like that, add your own amp that matches everything & upgrade the speakers.

the ES model uses an amplifer under the passengers seat. lower spec models dont come with the amp. Although the Alpine headunit is capable of driving speakers directly from the headunit, i couldnt guarantee sound quality or power running off the factory alpine headunit, it wouldnt be the same as in a factory ES vehicle with the amp.

I am quite into car audio, the only reason i have kept the standard headunit in my ES is because it has the steering wheel controls and rear headphone sockets, i like the idea of the rear sockets and use the steering wheel controls all the time. you can get an adaptor for the wheel controls but it was too much mucking around.

in your case with a lower trim model I would definatly recommend an after market headunit. a. better compatibility with mp3, b. better power output, c. most likely better sound quality unless you go hunting the ES amp... (which still doesnt have a huge power output).

in terms of CD stacker, if you are in the age of mp3's get a head unit with a USB input or ipod input (or both) and use this instead of a CD changer.

Pioneer and Fusion make 4 inch speakers to go in the doors and they are both good quality sounding units . Their are plenty of 4 inch speakers out there just need to look ;).

Gedday Pete! Have you sold your D2. Saw one in Braeside t'other day with the Sahara bar, big tyres Dk Grey in colour etc. You weren't driving it.

Yes i have, its gone to a new owner..lucky fella. I do miss it though.
My wife & i returned from Noosa a few weeks ago & drove into the driveway & no D2...It hit me then..& now the hunt for another project..well maybe..

On a slight tangent how do you get the unit out of the dash. The lighting for the LED display on mine is on the blink and thought I would take it apart to find out what I could do. If it is cactus can you get a replacement unit?

Hi John,
All u need is a piece of coat hanger wire bent in a U shape with 2 notches in the ends. Insert into the 2 holes spread apart & pull stereo out.
The unit has 6 LED's soldered onto a board & is a pain to pull apart.
If u are handy with a soldering iron & good & taking things apart then have a go.
Otherwise hop down to JB's or someone & u can puchase a new unit for a couple of hundred dollars. With better power output.
