View Full Version : Tinting plastic alpine windows

Hi, I took the old girl to get a tint job ready for summer.
The specialist shop said no problem except for the little windows at the top, as they are plastic and the tint will not take to them.:(
I've seen other D1's with tinted alpine windows, surely mine can not be the only ones made out of plastic. What have others done to tint theirs?

Mine were glass in both D1 and D2. I know the D1's were glass cause the shattered when I rolled the vehicle and wrote it off:(
Are yours an after market replacement perhaps:confused:

Not that I know of.
They do not sound the same when you tap them and they distort reflections unlike glass.

In my experience the alpine windows usually distort, some worse than others. They will sound different when tapped as they are a smaller section. Look for a manufacturer's etching or stamp somewhere, should have the LR logo on it if original or possibly Pilkington Glass.

Both of my discos have glass alpine windows....
BTW, the tint shop I used actually tints them out of the car and then refits them ... = no gaps

Basically the job of doing them is hard and takes ages, so it sounds like he's trying to get out of it.
When I tinted the old Disco, the guy said the same thing (claimed I'd booked it as a Land Cruiser). the guy was asian, so I spoke some Mandarin, he got all excited and did them for free:cool: albeit a small gap.
Best to pull them out for no gaps.

Definately Glass.
All 3 of mine were done & yes apparantly can be a pain to do.;)
I just think he is trying to get out of it, If he has quoted to do all windows then get him to do them as quoted.:D

I had both of my discos tinted - all glass, the guy tinted them in place - no gaps took about 30 mins.
Is there a problem?:)

OK. It looks like he did not want the job, and just wanted the easy money for the other windows.
I'll hunt round for someone else.
Thanks for all the input. I thought is was strange.

Hello mate I have a disco 1 and the springs were sagged in the front and just stock
all around So I went to a spring works and had them make me up a set of springs
heavy duty front and back and 2" higher than factory
OH mate beautiful best thing I did it handles like a sports car now
it cost me Three hundred dollars to get them all made up and I installed them myself
Lolz cheaper than lift kits and all that and your not tampering too much with the design

Sorry mate
and as for the Tint on the top windows mine are plastic
I tinted mine and had no dramas its 7 yrs now and
its coming off the front windows but its fine on the top ones
also some top windows are factory laminated already and dont need tint
they are glass
maybe the guy is just too lazy to get in to fiddle as its an awkward
spot to tint

Find someone else to do the job. Plastic can actually be tinted if done properly. They can tint motorbike screens now without problems, so they could definitely tint Alpine windows on a Disco. But as said they should be glass if they're standard. Good luck.

I've had two window tinters quote to tint my windows. The first just refused to do the alpine windows. The second said he would have a go, but wasn't confident that he could do it.
Anyone know of someone on the southside of Brisbane that has done a good job on the alpine windows??

I just had my main windows tinted. They can do the alpines but they are difficult and will charge me fifty dollars each for them. So they must be glass.
Have deferred this until later.

I have just had the windows tinted - all of them :D
I had to phone around a few places, I finaly got a man that said "those small windows up the top, there a pain but I can do them"
Looks like he did a good job too.

I'm also looking for someone who can do Disco windows - ideally all of them including the alpine windows (though presumably not the windscreen). I'm on the north side of Brisbane (Boondall) so if anyone knows of a good operator this side of town, please tell.

Seen them done, all they need do is cut out the tint using the outside as a slightly oversized template then fit and trim, took about 20min per side.

The mob I used for my tinting just flat out refused to tint the alpines something about them getting to much magnified heat and ****tering. Just a load of bull**** if you ask me but I had the rest done as they were one of the cheapest and had the best warranty to go with it. Still wanting the alpines done if anyone can recomend someone (brisbane south)
