Considering a lift kit ....

Can anyone offer some advice or experience on a lift kit for a 2000 Discovery II Td5 ES. I have recently fitted BFG'd 265/75/16 which now fill the wheel arch making it appear that there is not allot of clearance. The vehicle is used for 80% on roaad and 20% offroad on weekends. Mainly sand (Ngarkat) or rocks (Flinders - Bendleby Ranges) SLS is fitted and CDL.

depends how much you want to spend.I run ome on my d1 and reckon its pretty good but others don't like it.Evary one seems to say koni or bilstien shocks are the go.LRA does springs(they are in Melb)there is heaps of diff manifactures around.Hope this helps

ive got a D1,i run a 2" spring lift with 30 mm spring spacers,i bought kings springs,they seem to handle all i throw at them....thers heaps of packages around(check ebay) for around$700 dollars springs and shocks but i dont know how good they are....once you fit a spring lift you may find the steering "wanders" a bit,you need to put in some castor correction bushes in the front arms theyll cost you about$150.im about to fit a 3" bodylift then some rubber flares and cut the guards and doors so i can run 35s (i believe D2s have a larger wheelarch than the D1) to fit a bodylift you need to get longer brakelines,gear lever extensions,and raise the radiator...

I run OME springs wtih Koni shocks. Very good setup but a bit hard given I have the heaviest springs. This setup will set you back about $1200-1500. Koni's are an excellent shock...would also recomend Bilsteins.

However, if you want cheaper...my brother in law has Ironman on his D2 and he has been very happy with the setup. Its done a couple of long trips including the simpson without too many hassles. Cost him about $700-800 I think (steering dampener not included).

Does it have air bags or springs? Being a 2000 ES I expect it has air suspension.

Yeah it has air bag rear suspension. I have seen you can get spacers for the rear air bags which I am considering and then 2" lift sprins on the front. It seems that heaps of people do this kind of set up on D2's with good results.

I think you can also get longer airbags, but I haven't had any experience with the D2. The suspension systems are a little different and so hopefully we will get some D2 owners answering.

I have a 2 inch lift on my D2 and have the SLS Airbags in the back, i'm using aluminium 50mm spacer blocks to lift the rear. I've had this setup for just under a year now with no problems at all. I'm also running BFG 265/75/16 Muds. My springs and shocks are Lovells and for the money have been great. Only issue i have is the rear shocks are not valved correctly to control the airbags so on rough ground the rear rocks around a bit.
I'm going to remove the SLS system soon and go back to springs in the rear with airbag helpers for when towing.

If you have airbags on the rear then try out 4x4Discovery.com.au - "think outside ..." (http://www.4x4intelligence.com.au). They produce blocks for the rear airbags. Cheaper than replacing the airbags with longer ones.

As for up front, you might need to work out what you may be putting up there. I run heavy duty springs as I have bullbar, winch, lights, steering protector etc. If you have intentions to fit this then consider heavier springs.

Looks like you've modified your arches ... is that correct? Hav'nt modified the arches

How is the chip ..... and which one did you use?
Chip is great, i would recommend Tombie's chip for you (he's a member on here, great chip at good price, and he's closer to you) I used LRA for mine only because they're local and i could get it done on the spot. A chipped TD5 engine is a much better beast that unchipped as far as power and torque go.

What is the 4.11?
4.11 are the diff ratios, i have changed mine to give me slightly better than standard ratios with the larger tyres. You would have noticed a differance in your gearing after fitting your new tyres, the 4.11 diff ratios fixes this (brings it back to normal). They're far better for offroad too because it allows the gearing to work better with less load on the motor.

Where did you get the rear air bag spacers from and are they easy to fit?
I was lucky to be given this set but they were missing some of the parts of the kit which i made. 4x4 intelligence in melb will supply them though. Very easy to fit, just need to work safely, would take about an hour to fit

I used Lovells 50mm heavy duty springs in the front and lovells gas shocks all round. Am happy with them for the price but as mentioned before the rear shocks are not correct for the airbags in the rear of the disco, you need shocks valved specifically for airbags. In rough country the rear of mine rocks about a bit due to the disco being fairly tall. I'm going to remove the airbags in the near future and fit springs.

Hey Crash,

No need to lengthen brake or ABS line if only going 2". I did'nt really notice any differance in handling either and have not bothered with castor correction.
Go for the lift mate, the disco looks much better a bit higher up:cool:
