Soft-Dash Classic- diagnostics??

Hi all, wondering whether anyone can clue me in to what diagnostics are compatible with my June '94 MA rangie. Haven't had the car long, it had the airbags replaced with coils by a previous owner and the suspension warning lights on the dash are on all the time, also have a SRS warning light on. I would be interested in getting some kind of code reading and resetting system but have absolutely no experience or knowledge of these things. I am not a complete ignoramus with regard to things mechanical- I completed a motor mechanic apprenticeship in 1983- but have been out of that game since before EFI systems and such became commonplace.
I would also like to retrofit O2 sensors to this vehicle. I downloaded Phillip A's tutorial on this (great doc- thanks Phillip) but my ECU plug is different to that shown.
Are the electronics on these soft-dash models more akin to the P38a than to the previous classic models? Will OBD2 systems communicate with it?

The electronics should be similar to a very high end Disco 1, the dash is basically the same. There will be stuff that the Disco doesn't have though. Traction control on the rear axle, and electric, heated memory seats are two that spring to mind. (thats assuming that your clasic is a top spec one)

If the OBD2 works with the Disco it should work with the RRC. (someone will no doubt answer shortly)

I think the EAS diagnostics stuff for a P38 will work on a RRC EAS it just has a different lead. That would probably be able to turn off / disable the lights?

As far as i'm aware they won't be OBDII, even then theres a chance a reader may not work. The Soft Dash classics are more akin to a disco I with all the fruit than a P38 (thank gosh i hear you say).

SRS - May need someone with rovacom or similar

EAS - Sounds like they just put coils in and didn't disconnect anything. I know on the P38 (same ecu) you can bridge a couple of terminals on the ecu connector to disable the Dash light.

Check out Range Rovers (http://www.rangerovers.net) there is a whole forum dedicated to the late model classic, which is all the US got.

Just had a thought. Since the Range Rover softdash is essentially a flash Disco1 update, is the ECU under the driver's seat like earlier RR Classics or behind the driver's kick trim like in the Disco1?

I don't have a working camera at home at present, but the multi-pin connector on my ECU has the pins arranged in 2 rows rather than 3. I may be able to post a pic tomorrow.

Hmm, I assumed the one under the driver's seat was the correct one. There is also an ECU under the passenger seat, I'll have a look behind the kick panel. How many ECU's can these cars have??:eek:

I don't know how many yours has. My Disco1 has the fuel injection ECU (the one you're looking for) behind the driver's kick trim. Then a few smaller electronic modules behind the glove box (cruise control, power windows etc). Nothing under the seats.

Yours will have everything mine has plus the ABS module, air suspension module and whatever else yours has.
Just pull the driver's kick trim out and see what is behind it. The ECU (if like a Disco1) will be in the top region of this area. With a bunch of relays below it and a mass of wiring in front of it.
I have pictures of mine in one of PhilipA's O2 sensor threads but I couldn't find it last I looked for that thread.

I just couldn't see LR changing the plug design on the 14CUX ECU just for one year of the RR when it has been the same for years and years in all sorts of vehicles.

Well blow me down if there isn't another ECU mounted behind the right-hand kick panel! Actually above the footwell on the R/H side. Labelled 14CUX etc. Bingo. Has the same connector as in the aforementioned diagram.
So what's all the stuff under the seats?
Also, where would the diagnostic plug be located?

Good you have found it. Maybe the air suspension ECU is what is under the seat?

I did fit the O2 sensors on mine. Did everything myself except weld the exhaust bungs in. I took it to Midas who supplied and fitted the bungs.

The tune resistor is located under the steering column. Open the flap door thing under the column and it should be taped up on the loom. Mine was fairly obvious once you were looking at it.

As for the communications port there is one but not sure which plug it is as my Disco being base model has a few unused plugs under there. There is a factory code reader you can get from the US. Philip and I have one each. They were a factory fit in the US but not here. They do not use the port but are hard wired into the ECU.

If you want a code reader then get on to discoweb.org -- (http://www.Discoweb.org) and ask someone to send you one from their wreck. That is where I got mine from.

Under the Drivers seat is the ECU for the Air Suspension,
Under Passenger seat ECU for ABS.
