View Full Version : Soggy Carpet

I did a quick search but could not bring up a previous post which I think dealt with this problem.
Been raining quite heavily here in Adelaide and I have noticed that the drivers side front carpet has quite a decent puddle under the rubber backing :(
I would never have noticed if I did not have to get down on my hands and knees to fix a jammed CD in the changer under the seat.
Is this likely to be a windscreen sealing problem or do I have some cancer somewhere that is not obvious???
No rust in the floor so could not have been leaking too long.
It is not leaking from the heater.
Any ideas?????

I had something similar just recently, and thought it was something more sinister.
Turns out I had blocked aircon vent pipes or something.
The problem only occurred after I had been using the aircon/heater, and even then, not everythime.

I would say your sunroofs are leaking (if you have them offcourse), either the drains are blocked, broken off, or its leaking between the sunroof assy and metal roof, it then runs down the A pillars and collects in the foot wells. VERY common problem with series 1and 2 discovery's
If it is the sunroofs, which I think it is, the only real solution is to remove the headlining, take out the sunroof assys completely, remove the pathetic seal that landrover fitted in the factory, then refit the roof assy on a good bead of silicone sealer.

I also had a leak in the passenger footwell on my D1, but the water pooled on top of the rubber mat.
I found there was a gap between the plastics on the exterior in front of the bottom of the windscreen. The gap was only small, about 1mm or so, but when it rained hard the water was forced in. I used a bit of silicon sealant to fill the gap, which stopped the water.

Hi Thommo..
I'm a newbie with this site and my D1, but have the same problem: discovered that the sponge underlay on the driver's side was sodden. A review of this site came up with the following candidates:
1:Blocked aircon condensate drains. They emerge inside the transmission tunnel, easy to see from under the car. Mine look clean as a whistle.
2. Sunroof. I don't have one.
3. Floor cracks round the body attachments. Mine look fine.
4. Upper windscreen seal. Here's doco on the official fix, that I got from a previous post: Mark Hopkins - Water Ingress (http://freespace.virgin.net/mark.hopkins2/WaterIngress.htm).
I notice the reply from nice1guv about the external trim gap. Not quite sure where this is, but he says it relates to a pool forming on top of the rubber mat - not my problem.
I'm not sure whether mine leaks just standing in the rain, or needs to be driven in the wet. Anyhow, I've done 3 - using a butyl mastic seal.
HTH.
Don
The painful thing is drying it out. I lift up the carpet and underlay with bits of wood and direct a blower heater towards it. Want to avoid the fag of removing seats and centre console, which I *think* is required to remove the carpet.

I had a leaking heater core which filled the foot well with water and leaked out of the car when it was stationary.
I replaced the heater core and its fine.
Usually when you have a water leak it leaves a trace where it has gone, try and follow it back.
Does the water have any distinct colour. Mine had green from the coolant. Brown could mean it has come from a rusted area etc.
Hope it helps

carpets out, eman seats and console out. ive just finished this process :) it doesnt take that long actually, nor is there anything hard involved. i refitted everything back in to the car with only 2 gubbins and one broken clip in just under 2 hrs this morning.

Just to clarify where my problem lay: stand on the passenger side next to the front 1/4 panel and look just below the base of the windscreen. My D1 has a black plastic panel below the windscreen. I think it may be in about three sections with possible gaps in between and even at the ends. I silicon sealed these gaps and had no more water leaks.
It was a while ago, but I seem to remember the majority of the water pooled on top of the mat and there was a small amount under the mat. I think the water was driven in through the gaps under heavy rain and then ran down the inside of the firewall.

I recon it could be the sunroofs as the water appears to be very clean & fresh.
I don't like the idea of removing headlining and sunroof assembly if not absolutely necessary.
In the mean time I will dry out the offending area as soon as we have finished this wet spell and then give the floor a good coat of anti rust paint possibly bung in some drain holes with grommets.
If absolutely necessary then I will cut out the offending carpet area (starting to show signs of wear any way) and cover with easily removable floor covering like anti slip matting.
All sounds a bit bodgie I know but will make life a lot easier when getting in and out of vehicle with muddy boots etc. This will motivate me to move the CD stacker out from under the seat. I like the idea of a hose out interior like a defender, LOL
I know I can hear someone say why not get a defender, if I could get a V8 shorty for a decent price I would already have it! :)

I am in the prosess of drying the rubber underlay out at the moment as it is damp in each foot well with alot of surface rust starting to show it's head.
I have no idea where the water has come from:angel:
I have taken the seats and carpet out already but have know hope of getting the bloody rubber stuff out though, to get the carpet out the face of the dash and whole console had to come out and still i had to cut abit of the carpet because it went under the dash.

If it was the sunroof you would see it soaking into the headlining as it has a sort of felt texture and it soaks it up and goes dark.
My sunroof was leaking at the gap between sunroof frame and the car roof. I put some black electrical tape round the join and problem solved.
The leak was bad but always dripped onto the rubber mat in the footwell so I could see the puddle.
On the other hand, when my external AC drains were blocked, there was a trickle of water out of the vents above each foot well, rear included. It wasn't obvious until the carpets started to stink.
I took the carpets out and they were soaked and I had pools of water in each foot well. I have them drying at the minute. It's real easy to get them out. Especially if you take the seats out, which is only 4 bolts each seat (I think).
I think if it was the sunroof you would defo see signs in the headlining.
To clear the external AC drains its a simple job or you could run it and look for 2 puddles under the car.
I thought you guys didn't get much rain 'Down Under'. I'm from Ireland and it rains nearly every day:(

Mine also leaks in heavy rain. I've traced it to the top corners of the windscreen. It then runs down the back of the A-pillar trims and drips on the floor.
My windscreen had been replaced by the previous owner and it isn't straight in the opening. At some stage I will put a new windscreen in (it's chipped too) and hopefully this will fix the leak.

You don't necessarily have to take the sponge out in one piece. I lifted the carpet and then used a Stanley knife to cut the sponge around the line of the trans tunnel. It will then come out of drivers and passengers footwell in 2 pieces. To dry out the area borrow the missus hair dryer and leave it aimed in there for a couple of hours.
If I were you I'd be leaving the sponge out till I worked out where the water was coming from.
Some people ( trying to think of the past threads on this ) have had problems with rust holes in the side kick panels below the A pillar . If that's your problem you'd probably need to take the outer guard off to fix it. Another possiblity is the sealing of the metal clips over the gaps in the gutters around the roof. Landrover in their wisdom did not fit any sealant to those allowing water to run into the car though the gap.. You should take those clips off and put silicon in there and refit them.
But I reckon its most likely your windscreen

mine was the blocked and partially detached a/c condensor outlet.it was leaking from the top of the outlet when a/c on...directly onto the ds floor. I ended up cutting the underlay along the angle of the base of the transmission tunnel so that I could get it out and dry...and get it out again if required.

Just found out i have the same problem in my D1 so figured i'd just revive this thread and ask some questions.
Bad news is i did find some rust in footwells (mainly drivers a little passengers) so i've cut out the soaked foam mat and was wondering what is the besy way to remove the rust and re-paint the footwell.

I'm also having troubles and have a few questions.
I don't have a sunroof, its seems to leak when in the rain or when i use the windscreen washers.
Any ideas on where it might be leaking from?
Probably the windscreen;)

Yeah thats what i was thinking with mine, checked the a/c drains and they were clear and don't have a sunroof. Going to leave the matting out untill i find the source of the leak

Reviving thread as after all the rain over easter weekend and I happen to be up around Noosa Double Island in all the rain I noticed a little water dripping sometimes on to my right foot. I did have a new windscreen fitted a number of years ago and it was OK but with being in toowoomba I have not had any decent rain to drive in for a while. I am thinking wndscreen as it drips on my right foot but I cant see wear from passenger side is dry. Thought door seal near dash level also (but i think that was just pressuere cleaner when washing.):confused:
Any thoughts as I would like to stop it before i get rust.
Has any one found there leaks.

AND I'm doing the same thing.
looked at running the wire for my rear battery.
found surface rust on the pas side and the foam on that side damp?????
still have to check AC drain.
now have all seats and carpet out.
cut carpet under heater box.
cut foam around tran's tunnel and came out as one pice.
RUST, (surface) wire brush on the grinder, rust converter, prime, paint.
this time I'm not colour paining it but I will use black body deadner, so it will seal the floor seams.
Also found rust around cargo barrier mounts in both floor and roof, once the trim was removed...Not happy with the so & so that fitted it.
leaving the alpine windows for another time...

Hi
I too have water in my passenger foot well (but never enough to wet the carpet, only the foam) on my D1. I have checked my air con drains, they are fine.
The 2nd possible cause of the leak could come from the wind screen as posted here by others. How ever, I removed the carpet, foam and windscreen panel at the bottom of the wind screen on the out side. My mate then used a hose 'on the outside' of the wind screen while I observed from the inside. I found water trickling in from the large wiring lume (or possibly above the lume) that goes through the fire wall. There is no water coming down the inside of the A pillar that I can see from the kick panel.
Has any one seen water come in from here, I can't work out how it gets there as the lume remains dry in the engine bay?
I have a sun roof also. Does this have a drain that goes some where?
I think I will start by having my windscreen re sealed. Then go from there.
Any advise is much appreciated. I love my disco dearly but it I have concluded it must be female based upon it constantly requiring my attention for small niggling concerns and maintenance.:)
Thanks all

Check in the front duct/drain under the wipers. The plastic intake duct from the dash is pushed through the body during assembly & not sealed very well/at all. Seal around there to eliminate that one. Probably do the screw heads as well while you are there.

Hey guys, jumping on the bandwagon here. We had some really heavy rain yesterday and my new series 1 disco now has wet carpets. The drivers well is wet down the edge of the door (no whre else that I can feel and the passenger's the same but less so)
I already have the foam and carpet out of the back and have reated the small amount of surface rust there but want to do the footwells aswell (play safe) Only thing is, There is a metal square at the side of the drivers seat which seems to trap the carpet and won't come up so how do I get the carpet up? Do I have to remove the seats and the lower seatbelt mounts?
edit...
5h1t! just managed to get the edgings off and found the foam VERY wet, some surface rust(moderate amount which I am not really concerned about. The issue is that the passenger side has obviously been leaking for YEARS as the weld which runs down from the bonnet release catch is now a 2cm wide gap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, should have looked more thoroughly when buying it but the rest of the car is in such good condition I didn't dig that deep! (idiot) Anyway, my question is this:
Is this an issue which requires welding or can I treat the rust and all is well? (I think welding would be best but I will yield to more informed opinions)
I'm taking the wing off tomorrow to see if I can trace the leak (assume it is from the bottom corner of the windscreen). Wil keep you updated.
Phil

My recently replaced windscreen leaked 2 days later as we had heavy rain.
The installer told me Discos sometimes leak. I had enough water to totally soak the sponge rubber carpet underlay.
I followed the LR water ingress suggestion of putting sealer in under the top Finisher strip.
I used Sikaflex, and no leaks yet even after the recent downpours.
 God help anyone though that wants to replace the windscreen next time around

Found the issue! It's the drain at the bottom of the windscren into the front wing. The drain was blocked at the bottom and has rusted clan through. Can anyone tell me how to deal with this? If I remove the wing can I clean it up and treat it?
Cheers,
Phil

Thanks 4Bee, I've just had a quote of $350 to strip it down, weld a plate on and seal it all. Think that's pretty good.

Just pulled up my passenger's side front carpet and underlay and this is what I found
http://%3Ca%20href=http://img641.imageshack.us/i/rust201005250351.jpg/%20target=_blank%3E[IMG]http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9688/rust201005250351.th.jpghttp://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9688/rust201005250351.th.jpg (http://img641.imageshack.us/i/rust201005250351.jpg/)
Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)
So I've treated it. Waiting for the underlay to dry. Will paint it. And then look for how the water got in. Never noticed any wet headlining so I'm thinking the sunroof may not be the cause. So I'll be checking around the windscreen and under the wipers and so on, following the ideas in previous posts.
Then I'll have to check the rest of the vehicle. :(

I am in the process of tracking the wet underlay problems also.Things that I have found and repaired so far-
1.Small rust holes on the inner guard adjacent to the horizontal channel section on the passengers side below the drain hole. This was easily found as the water could be seen tracking down inside behind where the kick panel is fitted.I had to remove the outer guard to repair the rust but had no real issues other than the sealant that LR used on the bolted edges acting like super glue.If you take your time and work around the edges it comes off o.k.
2.On the drivers side the black adhesive stickers that they use to blank off the holes in the front of plenum chamber had fallen off. This allowed water to run down the front and onto the wiring loom that enters through the firewall near the brake pedal.Even though the rubber gland was fitted and in good condition the water would run through between the wires in the loom and onto inside of the firewall onto the top edge of the foam underlay.I sealed the holes with some tape and will track down some rubber grommets but this seems to have fixed the leak on this side.
The best way I found of tracing the leaks so far is to start at the bottom on each side with the hose and keep checking inside as you work your way up to the the roof.If you take your time it should be possible to at least identify what area the leak is coming from.

HI all
My D1 has had a similar problem that I found after heavy rain, for years I lived in Brisbane through the last drought with next to no rain, I moved down to Wagga and all its done is rain. Its the driver side floor in mine (clean water) and I had it checked out when I had the windscreen replaced and there is a wiring loom that enters the fire wall halfway down on the drivers side just above the accelerator pedal directly underneath the top channel under neath the windscreen, the water drops of the channel onto the loom and flows strait into the car on the drivers side. I have filled the whole with selastic which has reduced he problem but not stopped it all together
Hope this helps
