View Full Version : Bringing a 90 over from UK??

Hi

Am planning on moving to OZ next year and given the price of the dollar and the amount of 90's available over here, thought I might buy one and ship her over.

All of the emigration sites give me views on the costs of this process, but hoped you guys could help me with the LR stuff.

Are there are any specs of 90 I shoudl avoid, i.e. if I got a 300tdi will parts be available? Should I expect any problems with a UK 90 when it comes to the import tehnical check?

Lastly, any particular 90s (or 110's for that matter) which make most sense economically, i.e. what do you guys like to play with and so I'd get some decent value if I sold it?

Thanks

I think this has been discussed in detail here fairly recently, and a search will find this discussion. Some here have done this, and gave full details of how it works in practice. From memory, the main requirement is that you have to have owned and used the vehicle for a substantial period overseas.

Nineties have not proved particularly popular here, although some people prefer them. My theory is that most Australians like to travel with so much junk that the ninety is not big enough, but the relatively high cost (compared to the 110 they were close to the same in the brief period they were sold here) may have also been a factor. Worth noting that most of the similar size Jap competitors have also been dropped from this market.

To further JDNSW's post, altho most dont own 90's, they are worth a mint to those that want them, as they are relatively rare.

Cheers!

Here you go..

I did it..

Hope it helps.

Main point is you need to prove ownership and use for a year. (this is what DOTARS will check - didnt make that particually clear on the above link)

As Pete said pretty easy to do , but have to have owned it for a year.

Parts are plenty for the 300 Tdi, Props and rear body work could be a problem but the rest is out here for the 110. They are not as expensive as i thought they were going to be . But if you want really chap parts then most just order them from the UK

I have a 300 Tdi 90 and i just throw a new rear prop in the back when the truck left the UK. But now here i can get paddocks, craddocks and all that lot to send one here anyway.
The speedo for the uk is legal here in Aus (as it has K's inside the Miles) but if you want then buy a K's one while in the uk of Ebay or at sodbury or somthing. I did that bought a brand new K's speado for a Defender for 15 pound (as in the Uk no one wants one)

My 300 Tdi 90 has been here for nearly 3 years and i am so glad i bought it with me , in fact annoyed i did not bring my winch challenge 90. We did a trip of 25,000 miles around Aus in our 90 when it first got here

G'day Sammy D

Although there are not many 90's here, they do pop up on the market from time to time.

If you can sell yours for around 11 - 12,000 pounds I would do that and buy another one here - you should get one for around $30,000 AU. (It may also depend how much you love your current 90!)

Other than a handful of imports, the AU versions are td5's - which raises another argument :D;)

If you were willing to settle for a 110 there are plenty more and probably better value 2nd hand.

I take it your are not talking about a TD5 one as you will never get one for anywhere near that. :)

And i also disagree that they are not a readly aviable as you make out

I agree with Ali.

While you can get them in the mid 30's they are almost impossible to find.....

Yup, not very many around, here's what's available ATM and prices:

TD5 90 - $40,600 (http://carpoint.com.au/used-car/LAND%20ROVER/DEFENDER/Victoria/csn5681697.aspx)

V8 90 - $11,000 (http://carpoint.com.au/used-car/LAND%20ROVER/DEFENDER%2090/Victoria/csn5987846.aspx) - looks To be in good nick, but recently had the heads replaced suggesting its been overheated - potential block problems down the track?

From memory, there used to be a rebuilt 300TDi 90 on AULRO markets for around the $17k mark. Came with the pickup/ single cab as well as the normal cab.

there were a couple of others that were selling for a long time one in mid thirties, and one in low thirties, both TD5's.

Sorry to infer that there are a lot - there aren't. (I was told they sold 42 but I think it's a little more)
I keep an eye on the market cause I'm gonna sell mine soon.
On carpoint there is usually 3 or 4 for sale.

Okay - maybe my estimate is a little low - I'll sell you mine for $40K tomorrow. ;):D

BTW - Nice 90 Reads!

Make sure you read the specifics regarding the importation of vehicles into Australia... not only do you have to have owned the vehicle but you have to prove that you have continually used the vehicle for 12 months... They will ask you to provide
1. The date you purchased the vehicle
2. That you have actually used the vehicle (for Aussies you will have to provide copies of Passports to prove you were in that country for that period that you owned the vehicle) there is a break of 40 days over the 1 year that allows you a break away from that country (holidays I guess)

And make sure you read the most up to date info possible as this is where I came unstuck... I now have a 4 month old vehicle that I bought for a steal (Defence members don't pay VAT and get 15%off) however the vehicle needs to be out of the UK within 1 year and cannot be sold in the EU..

My choices are running out real quick as I have to return back to my Job in Australia and unless I get unpaid leave to make up for 5 months continuous use I am in big trouble

My other option is to come back to the UK .... Use the vehicle then totally strip it and send it back as parts... And I am not sure I can get away with that

Read the DOTRS website and the Customs website... There is a lot to consider

I am also tracking down the details of a company in NSW who would be able to provide you with a compliance plate... Unless these guys are willing to provide one at a cost you will find it exceptionally difficult to get your car on the road

Hope this helps... and has not scared you off... Am currently in Hereford should you be in the area and wish to discuss this further

Regards
Stu

Not just aussies, i had to photocopy every page in my passport as well, to prove i had lived with the car

Also i don't know why you are worried about getting a compliance plate as they are the easyest of the lot to get. Took 3 mins for my 90 to get it :)

compliance is easy like reads said.....as the 90 has been sold here before, just not for very long:)..so its not like your trying to bring a totally new car into the country

I brought a 2002 90 HardTop from UK to WA in 2004. Had a couple of problems.
Customs said I didn't have enough miles on the clock, despite owning/driving it for two years. Tried to charge duty as a new import.
Slightly difficult to get it insured. Insurance companies weren't then set up for 90's, only 110's. No classification for a HardTop (.Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Finally decided it is a 'panel van').
To get compliance plate, had to fit kilometres only speedo, and change driver's door mirror to plain glass.
Oblong W.A. number plate stuck out from side of vehicle. Had to fit bracket to stop it swinging in the breeze.
Biggest ongoing problem is being stared at by other Defender drivers. Have been asked in car park 'why I blocked up the rear side windows?'

Had the same problem as it was an import. RACQ and all thoses would not touch the car as it is an import, But i am with Shanoons who are fine with the car and Know what it is even though mine is a soft top Van

I thought this so i bought a Brand new K's speedo in the Uk for $25 and and was going to fit it but did not need it for the compliance as the speedo had K's on the inside of the Miles. So it passed. But i did the K's speedo in anyway after the truck was on the road for a bit

Ah well i have a prestige number plate so that solves that problem :). it is smaller so fits perfect on the rear
