gone bush
25th August 2008, 01:04 PM
Hi all.
I want to get a snorkel fitted to my D2 but was wondering if there is any real difference in the brands and does one fit/work better on the D2.
Any info will be much appreciated
cheers

I had access to a cheap second-hand Airtec, but ended up buying a Safari, mainly because the head arrangement on a Safari allows it to be turned around backwards and also allows easy fitment of a oiled foam cover for slow dusty work...and because it looks tougher :p
Another potential problem with the Airtec is that the head sits fairly flush with the windscreen which may result in water flowing up the screen into the snorkel if you get a bit enthusiastic with water entries. The Safari is a better design in that the head is out from the screen.
I've heard people say that Safari also has better airflow characteristics and is better quality, but I'm not totally convinced of this as the Airtec is actually larger cross-section and the Safari doesn't mate up with the inner guard particularly well - hence the mod described in the other snorkel thread that is currently running...

I made the mistake of going the cheaper option and fitting the airflow snorkel. Be warned, you get what you pay for.:(

I bought the most expensive one over here in the UK :(, but LOVE it :D
Mantec, If its good enough for camel trophy and G4 vehicles, its good enough for me.
My choice was made by the fact I like the snorkel to be more discrete, and the safari and airtflow just look to much all the way down the wing imo, how ever having said that I think they look ok on darker colour cars, but on my blue one, for me it would have looked to much.
Also its all metal construction, so if you wack it with a tree branch for example, it wont break, I know a couple of people who have broke the safari snorkels, dont get me wrong, its not a habit to hit large branches when off road, but its something else to consider.

The Mantec looks great, however no need to be so harsh on the Safari. I've hit plenty of trees with mine and it's great. Safari is a very strong snorkle if you like clearing bush with it. Works great as a snorkle too.. I'm very happy with mine and in five years of owning it, I've never really thought twice about it. Which is what you want in an item like this... Set and forget.
I think the UK must just have alot of angry trees to be braking snorkels.

Go the Safari.
I got the last "genuine" LRA one ex Dubbo:cool::cool::cool::cool:.
The genuine has the Landrover badge, the non genuine is the same beast no badge.

Not sure I made the 'mistake' but I went Airflow as well. Knew I was not paying Safari price and not getting Safari quality.
If $ are not an issue then Safari would be a good way to go.

I have the Airtec. I like it because it doesnt sit as high or out as much as the Safari, its more moulded to the car and look less obtrusive. Plus I didnt have too much choice as it was on the car when I got it! :D
I think Airtec and Safari and your best options. They are well known brands and both good quality. I would suggest you go for the one you like the look of.

I've had mine now for just under a year now, about two weeks after i fitted it, it started warping and pulling away from the bodywork, there is a gap now, about 8mm, front and back of the horizontal section that i've had to fill with black silastic. My reasoning is that this is due to there being no fixings near the edges of this part of the snorkel.
Every time i look at the snorkle i curse having fitted it!!

I wasn't being harsh, just speaking my opinion thats all:( . "if" my car was a darker colour I would probably have gone with the safari, but on mine I "think" it would have looked to obtrusive. Its my opinion thats all, come to think of it my D1 is dark, but I put a southdown snorkel on that as its the best value for money (over here).
I personally think the safari is "over engineered" as there is no need to really bring it all the way down the outside of the wing when there is plenty of room to do it inside, like my mantec...
Anyone should just choose the one they like best, they all do the same thing.

Had mine on 4 months but hasn't warped - maybe too pliable in the tropics!
You're right - with only 3 bolts on ours and six on a Safari so that would hug the body work a lot better.

Monte Carlo Blue, Safari (Land Rover OEM in Oz) Snorkel. Suits the colour nicely, no need to be on a darker colour.

I recently fitted a Safari. Quite enjoyed the afternoon putting it on. The fittings are solid particularly with the bracket to the A pillar. First purchased an Airflow but sent it back as just too poor a fit.
Gave it a good work out up Cape York, no dramas.

No worries mate, we're only having a dig. Like the Olympics and the Ashes, where would our two countries be without some friendly banter (sledging) ? ;)

The Safari can be had for under $450 is you do some bargaining - hardly worth saving $125 to get the Airflow which is also smaller in cross-section apart from any fitting difficulties.
If you hit a branch hard enough to break a Safari, you're probably going to have bent/cracked some aluminium bodywork too! As for standing out too much, you can always paint them (mine is a nice gunmetal grey just to be a bit different). Having said that, if I had've seen the Mantec design first, I might've just made my own snorkel from some pipe and saved some dollars.
As for the Olympics, well on a per $ or per capita basis, Oz trashed the poms...

If it wasn't for us "Poms", you would have nothing to put a snorkel on to :p . It seems you aussies are very defensive over the safari snorkels lol, is it coz its an Oz company, do we need to add this to the ashes, rugby and Olympics........
It was not to do with the colour of it, I don't like the way its all down the wing, it could be bloody pink in colour, it dont matter to me.................I only gave an opinion, thats all :(
And theres more to the mantec than a "Bit of pipe" ;)

let's face it, at the end of the day, all snorkels are just a bit of pipe - and in the case of Safari/Airtecs, they're overpriced bits of plastic but a necessary evil for dust/water management. I can't see why the Mantec design can't be easily replicated with some mandrel-bent 3-inch pipe for the external part (and a Safari snorkel head which looks better than the Mantec unit) and some concertina tubing for the internal part...

I'll have to agree with you about us down here and the Safari. But in our defence I'd say its also because there is a limited choice. The other brands also are very similar but were (originally) inferior in quality. Safari aren't cheap (as Stuuu et al posted) and to that end, I've just managed to get 2 Mantec "plastic jobbies" from the UK for two 08 Defenders for less than the price of one Mantec unit in Australia:eek:
It's not just Safari that costs lots here:mad:

Hi Simonr23
Yes that is the genuine part.Dosnt mean a dealer fitted it.I emailed all the landrover dealers to get mine. All except 1 said sorry no longer available.1 got back and said yes but we just listed it on Ebay.I got it,it was real cheap but freight brought it up to $50 cheaper than a non genuine Safari.

Well if you have access to a tube bender that will bend 3" tube then you may be able to do it. As far as the flexi tube, the mantec does not require any airbox modification, it fits to the standard intake in the inner wing with another piece of tube that has the intake scoop welded to it, Its very well designed to be honest..................oops there I go again...........I'll be quiet now........

I wouldn't think it would make much difference, seeing as they suck in everything that comes close to the head, not that i've compared the difference mind you, i have a Donaldson pre-cleaner for really dusty drives.
Can't hurt i spose

I think we are just more used to seeing big plastic snorkels that run down the wing. Practically every second 4wd you see down here has one.
