I drove 15 kms to the airport and then got in a 35 year old Cessna 206 to fly out to Mirringatja - 97nm or 180kms south-west of Nhulunbuy.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2309/1002207of1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

On the way we flew past Gapuwiyak (this one's for Mr & Mrs Bundalene)

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/518/1002212xz2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

before we arrived at Mirrngatja (an Aboriginal Homeland Centre village)

Then it was 3 hours work of putting an 85cm satellite dish and FM radio antenna on the roof of one of the houses.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6548/clinic1xg2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And placing inside the house a small cupboard inside which is the satellite receiver attached to the dish and an FM transmitter which powers the antenna, so that now the people who live there can listen to radio in their own language 24/7 - something all of us take for granted yet has only happened for Indigenous people in north-east Arnhem Land over the last 4 years.

Then it was time to take off

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/515/1002225sck9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and head north-west across the Arafura Swamp (which actually makes Kakadu look a bit sad! :()

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9779/1002216skt7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and the pictures don't really do it justice. 26nm or 48km later we landed at the community of Ramingining. Once we got the 4 road kms into town I retrained a satellite receiver, then back to the airport and home to Gove airport at 9500ft with the temperature a pleasant 10 degrees outside. All in all a nice way to finish the afternoon. :D

Won't go into my day on the same peninsula... can't even get any further than driving 11km to work and then 11km home.

By the way Stuuu...
Do the legs on the Cessna retract after take off?
It must be a lot of running to get that bird down the runway using foot power:eek:

No the 206 has fixed undercarriage. On windy days like today they get off the ground pretty quickly.

He was using a rental. Lucky sod gets to do all this kind of stuff...

Stuuu if you're reading this and have a couple of aerial pic's of the refinery, post them up so they can see the difference to where I go on my working days!

I spent the day in an induction. I am off to Gove myself in two weeks. I am putting a HDPE liner over the tailings dam so it can be rehabed and planted. I will be up there for a couple of months hope to get some fishing in as well.

A fairly nasty looking track we found called "Bennetts" (this is the only 4wd track we took pics of) we had a look at afew more to...and got lost doing so:angel:

This is a Weir we found in the middle of nowhere on Madmens creek while looking for some good bass holes.
There were no roads leeding to it, and it was in the middle of a rainforest, makes me wunder who the hell built this and how old it is!

And some likely looking fishing spots for later on in the season.

Same for me... Google maps link is: Refinery]nhulunbuy - Google Maps (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=nhulunbuy&ie=UTF8&ll=-12.195031,136.688547&spn=0.035739,0.048451&t=k&z=15) Pic's a few years old.

I was thinking, post up the lat/long or maps URL for the main townships of your shots.

Hopefully the wind will die down enough to let you drop a line in. Have fun on those red mud ponds.

Thanks for the post. Pics look great.

I spent the day giving recruits a Barracks Inspection, followed by some drill and then the fun part. They had their initial needles at medical, so I went in and photographed them all as the needle was going in

One of the recruits back in late Jan was a lad who calls me daddy! :p
He marched out in late April.

Air Force or Army? Either Easo or I may know him.

If it was the first one, that'd be Course 02/08 and he'd know me :)

Cheers
