G'day all
what's a used LT 95 out of an 1983 5 door 110 with a V8 Bell housing worth? I don't mean price. I just need to know how rebuildable are they. Will it cost an arm and leg to sort it. I've found one that the owner says growls in first and second. Is it stuffed or is it an easy fix.
Cheers, Justin

urmmm...
relatively easy fix... "all" you have to do is replace the bearings.
but if your going to take it apart that far you usually replace the sycros, pump drive and all the seals while your at it.
Depending on how badly its growling they go for years, its once they start baulking at changes (remember its not a racing box), jumping out of gears and you can feel vibrations related to gear and engine speed coming back through the shifter that its properly dying.
you might get lucky and its just a case of a new pump drive and the proper lubricant required.

Do you know what size the parking brake drum is. Is there a larger drum on the 110 or is it the same size as the drum on a early Range rover.

When mine got noisy, it turned out to be only one bearing. But as Dave says, once you have it apart, you replace more, in this case just all the bearings and seals. Still going fine after another 250,000km. The major part of the cost was removing and replacing the box and the labour on the repairs to the box.

Thanks John,
At least this box will not need removing, but it has 115,000 miles on it. Does your have a large park brake drum.

Dunno what you call large! Its larger than on the Series 2a, but I can't comment beyond that. I would be surprised if it is not the same as on the Rangerover with the LT95, but I have had no experience with Rangerovers.

LT95 has a smaller handbrake drum than later boxes. Good news is, that the brake shoes virtually never wear out, just need degreasing now and then.

It's just that I was told the Isuzu powered 110's with LT95's had the same park brake as the LT85/LT230TC and that it also has a different rear output housing to attach the larger lt230 park brake. I am not sure if it was the same for the LT 95's fitted to 110's with a V8. The box I'm about to buy was removed from a V8 110 and I'm buying it sight unseen. I'm putting an Isuzu 4bd1T in my 130 Just want to get everything right. Also does anyone know what gear ratio is for an LT95 Fitted to a 1983 V8 110 County. I just want to know if it will be correct for my Isuzu engines low revs

oh BTW the only time you have ever killed a 95 is when you crack or deform the housing. anything else is mearly a flesh wound.

Can't remember the V8 ratio - I think it is about 1.3, definitely lower geared than the 0.996 fitted to Isuzu engined 110s. (These are high ratio - low is the same on all of them)

low ratio is the same across the board high ratio is either .996:1 or 1.123:1
v8's get the 1.123 and the suzis generally get the .996
if you run the 1.123 and the 4.7 diffs with the suzi you'll find that under most circumstances you'll forget the low range gears are even there.

These were the ratios I was told were available in the Lt95...........
0.9962:1 110 Isuzu, Last 4sp Rangie
1.113:1 Rangie
1.1227:1 Rangie
1.174:1 Early Rangie
1.336:1 110 V8, Stage 1 V8 and Stage 1 Isuzu
I think a 110 V8 with standard gearing (1.336:1) does about 3200 RPM at 100 Kph. I wouldn't like to push the Diesel that hard all the time.
I run the 1.113:1 gears with my Isuzu because they just happened to be the gears I had when I had the V8 and they are the next closest gears to the standard Isuzu gearing so I stuck with them.
Someone else might be able to confirm this, but I think with the 0.9962:1 gears you will do about 2300 RPM at 100Kph.

With an LT85, 3.54 diffs, and the 0.996 transfer case high range, you will do 100k's @2000rpm, 110 @ 2200, & 120 @ 2400 on standard size tyres, round figures.

Here is a pic of my lt95 (with the brake drum) and a Rangie housing sitting on top- sorry about the quality, taken with a phone.
Notice the Rangie backing plate sits closer to the t/fer box & possibly the 110 driveshaft is a mite longer, I dont have a complete housing to measure. The rangie drum is a lot smaller.

Hi Dave
My rear diff is a Salisbury I beleive it is a standard fit on British army rovers. I think the ratio is 3.54 thats what I've read on here, not sure how to tell for sure. Anyway the owner of the Gear box is supposed to pull it out of the 110 today and give me some serial or Id numbers when I get them I'll post it some one on here might be able to cross-reference them and get the actual gear ratio in the box. Might even find out if its original to the truck it came out of. I'll try to get some pictures of the drum and rear housing to settle this but some pictures from you lot on here will make for a good comparison.

Would anyone Have any other pictures of Lt95 boxes that were fitted to either a RR or a 110 that show the park brake and rear housing.
A picture of the LT95 gear box tunnel in a 110 showing the position of the gear shifter an hi/lo diff lock shifter would also be nice.
Do the shifters sit in the same position as an Lt85/230 or will I need to get a different tunnel.
Another thing I'm unsure of is the vacuum Method of engaging the center diff lock. Is it reliable ( never used or seen one ) and can it be changed to a mechanical lever method like my lt230. Where does the vacuum come from if using the Isuzu engine.
These are all easy questions for you guys :D

the vac unit is near on as bullet proof as the box,
they pull the vacume off of the alternator mounted vac pump, the same one that drives the brake booster. If you mess a hose or bust the vac unit the first thing you notice is a loss of brakes.
you can make a mechanical linkage for it but I wouldnt bother Ive only changed 2 one got taken out by a disintergrating prop shaft.. and another had the gearbox dropped on it during installation.
the biggest issue is degredation of the vac lines, Im not allowed to change them for a better setup in the ADF but I have a plan on how to change it a bit for reliability.

Can't help at the moment with pictures, but I believe the gear shifter is in a different position, and of course the high/low lever is next to the handbrake, coming out of the seat box on the 110. The vacuum diff lock can be converted to manual fairly simply, but the vacuum operation is quite reliable.
Vacuum comes from the same source as the vacuum for the brakes, on the Isuzu, from a vacuum pump on the back of the alternator.

Hi Dave,
I just found out my gear box has crossed the border into Canada I should have it in a few days time. I've been emailing with Bearman on here, he has been very helpful with advice, part numbers, contacts ect. his 110 County has a military shifter setup and says he finds it to be a better shifter set up. Do you have any info on how to install the military Gear / HI LOW shifter set up and do you think it's better than the civi County shifter set up. Now I'm chasing Military parts. ;) ;)

the setups are one and the same.
CDL is activated by Vac and the range selection is done with a lever.
it only changes when the civvy setup is the lt85 which then works an lt230 tcase.
in that case then yes the military one is better.
let me know how your going with your setup when it gets there I have some very limited bits for the 95 but it does happen to include the vac changeover valve to control the actuator

The military High/Low leaver is similar to the LT85 (although LT95A only needs two positions not 4 due to the center diff vacuum control). The civy LT95 had the high/low leaver on the vertical face of the seat box on the driver side. I will try and dig up a photo of the lever set up for the military version of the LT95.

That's what I was getting at. The gear box arrived yesterday. I also received an email from Fred smith of Fred Smith automotive in Bayswater Aus.. He gave me some good news!
Turns out I was given the wrong serial number from the back of the gear box
FRED WAS ABLE TO PUT 2 & 2 together! Here's what he said.
G’day Justin
The gearbox number you have is probably a 12C not a120. Please check. If it’s not a 12C I don’t have any info. on a 120 g/box number.
Let’s assume it’s a 12C, according to my info. the high ratio would be 0.9962:1.
The boxes fitted to the Australian 110’s,( civvy), were numbered 14C and the ratio could be either 1.336:1 V8 or 0.9962:1 Isuzu 4BD1 and 4BD1T.
It’s a bit weird that the hi-lo shift lever is on the hand brake side of the box (as in your photo) for a vehicle from the USA, as I would assume it was LHD.
This would not be a problem to you though as your vehicle is a RHD. And yes it does have the BIG handbrake fitted.
Some g/b numbers and ratios;
Up to suffix B…… 1.174:1 47T on intermediate gear and 32T on 3rd diff. gear.
Up to 35594059C 1.113:1 48T …………………………….31T………………….
>From 35594060C 1.1227:1 43T……………………………..28T………………….
12C Range Rover 0.9962:1 forgot to check teeth numbers.
14C L/R 110 etc. 0.9962:1 Isuzu or 1.336:1 V8 and also S3 stage 1 V8 and Isuzu.
All the above boxes had the original plain intermediate shaft, not the taper roller bearing shaft set up, as in the Australian Army vehicles, which have the 0.9962:1 ratio.
In my opinion the best all round ratio for the Isuzu engine, and with 750x16 tyres or larger is the 1.227:1 ratio. The 0.9962:1 is fine if you are doing nothing but long high speed driving (in flat country) but too tall for everyday use (especially in hilly country). Remember ALL the gears, including reverse are effected by the ratio selection.
It is also my opinion that the taper bearing intermediate set up as from “factory” is not as well designed as it could be. I think that one of the aftermarket “kits” that were available here in Aus. were better.
Regards, Fred Smith.
As soon as I saw this email I was straight outside in the dark with my flash light ( THE GEARBOX WAS STILL IN THE BACK OF MY PICK UP TRUCK) To my great pleasure the number was (12C05254 A):clap2: So it appears at least for now that I have bought an LT95A gear box. He said the 12c is from a range rover but this box came from a 1983 110 county from the U.K and it has the larger 110 county park brake not the smaller range rover brake. Did the Australian 110 county's have the lt95 12c gear box or was it a U.K only deal. The box's history still has me a bit puzzled. Does anyone want to comment on this or on Fred Smiths views on gear ratio or on the taper bearing intermediate shaft set-ups.
Cheers, Justin

G'day Justin,
Just for interest I had a look at the numbers on the 2 Lt95's I've got. My County box is 13C03901A and the box that came from a Rangie is 35572474C.
By the way, how are you going in your hunt for the other parts such as flywheel housing, bell housing etc ??
Cheers, Murray

Fred is correct about the aftermarket taper setups being better. They cost a fair bit though. The Australian army gearboxes have the taper bearing setup.
I have the highest gear ratio in my 350 chev powered 110 and it sits on 2500 rpm @100kph with 235x85 tyres.

Do tell, what's the difference between the army and aftermarket kit??:)

from what I understand its the way that the bearings are held and shimmed out.
Its not much of a mod to convert a taper to the after market taper conversion.
BUT I've only ever seen the military taper setup having never had to pull a civy lt95 yet.

I have no idea.
Was I saying there's a difference ?
Can you tell me ?
Not that I care :D

I think the mod is to do with how the taper bearings preload the idler shaft.
a piece is machined out of the shaft and theres something different about the bearing support.
But thats just speculation as I've only ever don military gearboxes.
I'll dig out an emei for it later if someone reminds me.

You said Fred was correct about the aftermarket tapered kits being better, hence I figured you must of known how?

Nah, I only know that theres one in the project 110 that I just finished off and they strenghten the transmission.
Mind you, thats as told by the bloke I bought it off., and Fred did the conversion (I think):D
Are we talking about the taper conversion in the transfer box??.
I have an army parts book & they are different to civvy. Did'nt maxi do them? (not the army's)

That way, I may be able to spot the difference

Feel for ya mate...
see attention spans and memory are things that you need to use or you loose.
its been proven simple activities repeated frequently can help prevent the loss of cognitive capabilities...
just one more reason its better to have a manual...

Thanks DeeJay, Glad to finally see some results! you guys sure seem to enjoy taking the pi$$ out of each other :wasntme: That picture only took about 14 replies and a few ( NAGS ) to arrive :p
Do you have any more pictures of the internal workings of the lt95 or directions on the tear down and rebuild steps I would love to see how the whole thing works I want to open my box up but am a bit worried that bits will fall out and I'll not know how to put it right.

Surely there is something electronic available??. You just have the standard gearbox?? I can photograph some pages out of the stage 1 workshop manual if u like- same gearbox, but it all takes time.
The photo in the above post is the army transfer box, the one below the standard box without the taper bearings.

I've just removed the bell housing from the LT95 I just received. Does anyone know what the cut out on the side of this bellhousing is for I've seen a pictures of other LT95 Bell housings but never noticed this bit notched out. I can't use it with my Isuzu 4bd1t so would like to sell it on but need to know if it's in good condition and is the notched out bit normal.

It'll be starter motor clearance for whatever the gearbag was adapted to;)
Ask the previous owner what was fitted infront of it?

I was told it was in a 1983, 110 V8 County with 115,000 miles on the clock.
