View Full Version : Not a happy bunny!

Am a distinctly unhappy bunny. As part of the TLC given to the 110 in Cairns the garage send rear prop shaft (rear tail shaft in Aussie??) to have new UJ's and yokes fitted out to a specialist firm.

Guess what?? Less then a 1,000 km later when I was 50 km west of Croydon I started getting noises. Road surface noise due to change of road surface? tyre going down? Nope Another 2 km checked front prop. Nope Gear lever juddered check engine mountings etc Another 2km a big bang and rear UJ yoke split. No cup on one side.

OK unload rear of 110 to get spare prop shaft out. Did any of the Jap 4 x4 drivers stop? Nope they were too busy towing their trailers etc. Farmer come out of his paddock about a 100 metres away and checked that I was OK as I was bolting up the spare prop shaft.

Now my problem is to locate a replacement yoke. Mount Isa, Burketown, Kathrine or Darwin???

IF I was heading back towards Cairns I would stick the rear prop somewhere the sun does not shine in the sunshine state.

I reckon the retaining circlip had not been located correctly.

Any other reason why a brand new UJ yoke should fail so quickly?

How can prop shaft UJs be checked on the vehicle?

Brendan

I think you were unlucky there. May have been install problem if things went wrong on them but hard to say. Well done on having a spare.
With my experience around machinery there is no way of predicting a failure other than obvious.
I use a stethoscope, UV Heat sensor and dial guage here and you can only pick a few:(. Even putting new in some times can fail before old.
Don't be to hard on the last one who did the work as they may not have been the cause. Tony

Stick the car on a level surface ... in neutral .. Hand brake off ..
Lay on ya back under car & Grab and shake the uni as your pushing the car forward with your spare foot on the chassie (or the tyre) .... As the uni is turning .. you should feel any offending play

Also buy a pocket size grease gun and give it a lube while your under there .. as you need to turn the shaft to get the grease nipples in the right spot

Good opportunity to get the missus involved :)

Mike :) I would call that the obvious ;) If things are lose... well they may need help soon. I like the idea of the missus involved:D.
I think in his case you may not pick it as was new. I just can happen other than humans:(

antoher cause is ecentricing of the cap recievers in the shaft... if youve abused it and the old uj has "settled" it will probabley last for ever, then when you put a new one in they dont fit "quite right" and when put under stress give out a bit and then they eat themselves... Very hard to spot, I dont know too many people who take to the shaft with a set of bore gauges to check the Uj for out of round recivers. hell Ive only ever done it once and that was because I had a UJ fail a bearing at less than 2000Km.

Brendan,

I have a 110 yoke here if you need one, (The shaft that belonged to it is bent...) it has your name written all over it! Let me know how I can get it to you?
By yoke, do you mean the rear one of the shaft at the differential end?

Bren has microcat on the toughbook but he might need to phone IT support before he can get it to work.
And if he phones me at 3 in the morning he won't be the only one that is not a happy bunny ;)

As for getting the missus involved, I don't reckon I would be any use whatsoever at this distance, my use will probably be as a parts delivery girl when I see him in Singapore in October.

Since Darwin was on the itinerary it looks like I will have to wait unyil I get there.

The UJs AND Yokes were replaced in Cairns and had done less then 1000 km. All of which had been on the bitumen.

Must admit I will feel happier when I have managed to replace it. It is a good job I come out with a set of spare props. In my experience the yoke goes so next time I will also travel with a spare set of yokes.

And guess who will be shoving them in her suitcase when she flies off to meet him.

And when they ask me at check in "Are you taking anything for anybody else?" I will smile sweetly and say no I always travel with random landrover parts.:D

I have a couple of new spare UJs in my old Rangie kit (not the P38A kit). They are aftermarket. I can look at the part nos. on the boxes when I get home from work this morning if needs be. I assume they are the same part as the Defender. I can even post them this morning if I find out early enough to get to the post office before it closes at 11am (note that I go to bed when I get home so I'd need to get them for my wife to post). I could send them Express Post - I have an Express Post satchel at home. They'd be in Darwin Monday.

SMS me on 0408 483 269 if they need to be posted today.

I'd certainly let the blokes in Cairns know - both the bloke who serviced the car and the bloke who did the UJ. You never know, you might get a refund or partial refund.

LATE EDIT

It looks like trhe RR and Defender UJs are different. I just looked them up.

Defender RTC3458
RR/Disco RTC4587

Nevertheless, I can ask my local LR blokes if they have them in stock and, if so, post them.

On behalf of Brendan, thanks for all the offers of help and advice.
Please don't think he is ignoring you all but he is still travelling and he reckoned he wouldn't have any internet/mobile access before Monday when he phoned me at some disgustingly early time on Friday morning.
Knowing him one of his first jobs when he reaches civilisation will be to acquire internet access somehow or other.
Travelling round Oz was a real eye-openener for me, no matter where we have travelled in Europe I don't think I have ever been without internet for more than 2 days, there is always someone with an unsecured wireless connection which you can borrow:angel:

If he gets mobile phone before internet and speaks to me, I will pass all the comments on.

Thanks again

Barbara

Not sure about that, might just have been that we were in the back of beyond and there was no internet to piggy back onto.

The thing about Europe is the population density is so high, you are never far from someone who is slack set up on the internet security front. I can remember sitting in my son's flat in Edinburgh and picking up 5 wireless connections and 3 of them were unsecured.

Our connection is secured but chances of anyone passing by and getting it is pretty slim unless they were wandering through the fields in front of the house, but I reckon it is best to be on the safe side. The problem with unsecured connections is not the likes of me who only ever pinch connections to pick up email, it is the seriously dodgy types who use other peoples connections to download illegal material. Try explaining why your IP address has been accessing child porn sites even though you would never dream of it!

Thanks for all the offers of help and advice guys.

Currently in Darwin. Lewy (Brian) gave me the name of a powerline company. They will sort out a new yoke and UJ for me. Yoke is slightly wider but since it will be a spare prop (sorry tail shaft) am not worried about that.

Spoke to guy who did service and organised the replacement UJs in Cairns. Hic comment was that since I have a lift on the 110 that caused the failure! After 800 km!!!!! Pointed out that was the first rear UJ to go on the 110 in 160,000 miles and that I had done 50,000 miles since the 110 was lifted. Also have cranked rear and front arms on which corrects the angle.

As long as I get a working spare shaft I will be a happy bunny again.

After weekend will take scenic route towards Kimberleys and Gibb River/Mitchell plateau.

Thanks again for all offers of help and advice

Am a happier bunny now.

Got rear prop shaft back with new yokes and UJ in. It is nicely painted and balanced. Thanks Lewy.

The tyre I though just had a slow puncture in. At least 2 splits in the sidewall so non repairable. Only done about 8,000 miles 13,000km Dohhhh

Will take until next Tuesday/Wednesday to get a replacement up from Adelaide.

Am beginning to appreciate the problems you Aussies have getting spare parts now. Tyre will cost about 100$ more then what I would pay in UK as well.

In overall cost of trip it is niether here nor there.

:o

Thanks Ron.

This trip has been made a lot easier by the generous help from various forum members, as well as the average Aussie. The average Aussie seems to be more willing to help out with advice/directions/maps etc then the average POM. That will be one of the highlights of the trip that I will be taking back with me when I return to the UK.
