View Full Version : TD5 Timing chain alignment

anyne setup the timing chain on a TD5 recently. the top gear has 3 slotted holes which appear to allow the gear to be rotated to allow advance or retard of the camshaft. cant see anything in rave that tells how to align it other than just finger tight release the tensioner then do them up, that doesnt seem to be very accurate to me.
anyone ?

As someone who has just done this my observations are this:

Following the RAVE procedure, the CAM gear bolts are tightened up last. With the CAM and Crank tools in place (or just a visual check that the locating slots are lined up) the chain tensioner is fitted. This lines up the top gear to the correct position prior to tightening. When I did this the gear and the bolt shadows (marks from where they were previously) lined up perfectly.

This is not a place for adjustment.

Correct. The key here is that both the crank and cam have to be locked first.

I made up two tools to do this job when I did the head gasket a couple of years ago, still have them in my toolbox

My local mechanic (and he has always been very good) says that my 1995 TDI has a timing chain not a belt.

I am the second owner from new.
How do I check if it has been fitted with a chain (maybe aftermarket?) in lieu of a belt. There has never been any of the usual telltail signs of rubber dust in the inspection hole at the bottom of the cover?
They did order it will all the bells and whistles, so maybe they did the right thing and had a chain fitted?

If a chain, does it need to be lubricated?
