Chassis interchangeability

The rear cross member on my S3 has been previously patched up and could really do with replacing, are these unique to the series 3 or can a later part be used?

There are a few later (County / Defender) models being broken locally so was thinking of getting these parts cut out - if they will fit.

Additionally one outrigger and the front chassis sections that the bumper attaches to also need replacing - are these parts interchangeable or a series 3 only part?

the series 3 chassis is very similar to the series 2a one.

The 110 and defender chassis is quote different and is based on the range rover one if I recall. Big difference is that they are for coil springs and do not have the mounts for leaf springs.

Actually I think i'm wrong about it being based on a rangie chassis, but hte info about the coil springs vs leaves is correct.

While the rear crossmember on the 110/Defender and S3 are similar, and probably could be used, other parts are not. In particular the front sections the bumper attaches to are not similar and cannot be used. Depends on the outrigger, but I think the 110/Defender ones are different.

Series 2, 2a and 3 chassis are very similar, and generally speaking parts from any of these can be used interchangeably. Spare sections for the bits you need are likely to be available as spares (e.g. Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne list them). Also, a check of the more arid areas of your stat is likely to turn up derelict Landrovers whose chassis will provide good spares without trying to fit the wrong bits.

The big difference between the Defender and the SIII is that the Defender chassis doesn't have the dropped down centre section that the civilian series Landies have, in fact the defender chassis is rather like the Aus military SIIa chassis.

Another thing is that the Defender chassis doesn't have the tubed holes for the PTO/tow plates.

The chassis rails are however in the same place.

the defender chassis rear cross member is closer to the series cross member than the perenties rear cross member.

Depending on how close to the rear cross member you cut it you should be able to use a county/deefer cross member on the back of a series but you will need to shift/mod the body mounting brackets.

Paid a visit to Land Ranger Spares earlier - he has rear sections in stock - for probably less than the starting bid + shipping. Also a very helpful guy too. Recommended.
