The Estate Vehicle 2002 discovery diesel has had spongy brakes from purchase. 2 pumps required to bring the pedal up.
I asked they be checked at service and told they're typical and OK. I'm not happy Jan. Could air be the only problem?
Comments please!! Oh, It is fitted with a Haymen- reese electric brake set up but I don't think this would have any thing to do with it?
And whats with chipping a tdi5 motor Like advantages and costs. We tow a light camper maybe 750kg all up and luv the travel and sights
Thanx

Hi Brinsley,
There are some big improvements possible on the TD5 with chips and larger intercoolers.
Tombie2 on here does various upgrades. I think a number of people on here have them installed.
The spongy brakes isnt typical in my experince of D2's. Is the fluid level staying consistent?
Cheers

spongy brakes and a stable oil level is almost always air in the system where it shouldn't be
spongy brakes thats dropping oil you cant find is usually the ABS module and sometimes leak back through the master cylinder into the brake booster.
chippings great.

Good chance of air in the lines. ALSO check the vacume pump to be sure its not leaking.

ts typical for D2's to have a soft pedal on the first pump and then the pedal comes up and hard if you do a second pump. LR did some work to try and fix this, which I'm pretty sure resulted in the MY03 upgrade coming out with different calipers. From what I understand, braided brake lines also help this a lot.
Personally, it doesn't worry me.
