There has been a strange momentary rattle on start up, and also a slight slackness in the transmission with my 08 Defender. At the last service the guys at Melbourne Land Rover decided to book it in to have a look at it after advice from LR in the UK. They leant me a nice Volvo as they needed the car over 2 days. Apparently the clutch assembly on a few vehicles has been found to have a loose spring assembly. I've just got it back all fixed, and am now pretty happy with the service at MLR. The car's done 35,000 kms and it's been rattling for probably 10,000 of those. I initially put it down to normal diesel start-up noise aned wasn't concerned. Just thought you guys would be interested.

Cheers
Julian

I get a funny "brrrp - brrrp" noise on startup, which you can hear and feel through the bulkhead, but I was thinking this was something to do with the ABS system (priming or whatever). Only goes for 1 sec or so and not again until the next re-start. Is it anything like that?

Either I'm deaf or I just don't get anything apart from the engine starting after a very, very short cranking.

Two things I miss from the Td5 and Tdi
Td5 - started first click, no cranking to even mention
Tdi - Don't you just love the black cloud at startup. Especially when someone's standing behind the vehicle

The start-up rattle is common on most new jap diesels. Our work vehicles do it and so does many others from asking around. Pat

Along with yours and Dullbird's - mine burps too - but it seems to not happen on them all - solmanic's has impeccible manners (doesn't do it).

Mine makes a "boing" noise on start up and it appears to come from behind the dashbord. One poster on the UK forums described it as "like a mouse jumping off a spring board" or at least thats how he explained the noise to his children. I guess it could also be described as a burp. I find it amusing :).

You get worried when you don't hear the noise.

OK I now realise mine does burp on startup, its after the engine cranks, I was thinking before or as it turns over.

I reckon its the brake system pressurising as the ABS modulator is on the firewall right in front of the A pillar.

... either that or the launch control;)
